As a longtime fan of both GWAR and “Barbie,” I couldn’t contain my excitement when I heard that the beloved shock-rock band had covered “I’m Just Ken” for The A.V. Club’s A.V. Undercover series. The concept of popular bands performing covers of hit songs is always a fun twist, but GWAR’s unique style and flair for the dramatic made this collaboration particularly intriguing.
The A.V. Club, now managed by new owners, has revived one of its most beloved yet forgotten elements in a grand manner. On yesterday’s pop culture news site, they reintroduced “A.V. Undercover,” a video series featuring popular bands performing covers of famous songs, which are typically well-known hits and a tad amusing. For instance, They Might Be Giants covered “Tubthumping” by Chumbawamba. This week, the team at The A.V. Club took it up a notch with GWAR, the renowned shock-rock band known for their costumes, delivering their interpretation of “I’m Just Ken” from the Barbie soundtrack.
(To be fair, they said “We’re just GWAR” but what truly matters is their art and creativity.) You can check out their video here:
“I’m Just Ken,” an Oscar-nominated tune, initially brought to life by Gosling with collaborations from Simu Liu who portrayed Ken’s arch-rival (another Ken), was featured in a massive musical number and dance battle within the film during its climax. Since the movie’s premiere, Liu has taken the stage alone to perform it, while Gosling sang it at the Academy Awards. The catchy number gained popularity on streaming platforms as well, achieving viral success separate from the “Barbie” movie.
GWAR, known for their theatrical performances in costumes with distinctive demonic stage names, was established in 1984. The band has seen a constant influx of new talent over the years. Their music is characterized by provocative language and themes, such as excessive violence, sex, and politics. GWAR has received both praise and criticism throughout their career, gaining significant popularity during the 1990s when they were featured in shows like “Beavis and Butt-Head” and “Empire Records.” Additionally, they have created an extensive merchandise line, which includes books, comic books, board games, alcoholic beverages (beer and whiskey), toys, and adult novelties.
“I was strolling down the street the other day, not typically the one to pen lyrics, but an idea struck me. ‘I’m just another Ken,’ I thought, ‘if only I were in a different place, I’d be a ten.’ This character, portrayed brilliantly by Ryan Gosling in that film, is both absurd and heart-wrenching. I felt compelled to write about him, this man who’s so desirable yet unable to gain the love of the woman he yearns for. So, I sat down at the piano and let the melody flow. My brother Andrew, my collaborator, joined me, and together we completed the rest of the song.”
