Watson’s Star Previews Mary And John Working Together On Season 2’s First Medical Mystery, And A First Look Reveals Why She ‘100% Relies’ On Her Ex

CBS is gearing up for its premiere week in the fall of 2025, and Watson will be one of the first shows back. Originally planned for a mid-season return in the 2025-2026 TV season, the drama starring Morris Chestnut as a doctor-detective will now launch its second season this fall on a new night. The season premiere features a deeply personal case for Mary, as her mother is accidentally poisoned and is experiencing a rapid progression of a rare form of dementia – a situation her exes weren’t prepared for. Rochelle Aytes, who plays Mary alongside Chestnut’s character John, recently spoke with TopMob about what viewers can expect as her character leans on him for support.

I just got a sneak peek at the Season 2 premiere, titled “A Son in the Oven,” which hits CBS on October 13th and will be available to stream on Paramount+ the next day. While there’s a fascinating medical case of the week, the title hints at some serious family drama – it looks like Mary’s daughter is going to have a really tough time. We’ve seen John and his team work wonders before, but things might be a little different this season. It seems Ingrid may not be returning after the events of Season 1. What really struck me, though, is how committed John is to helping Mary – you can tell he genuinely cares about his former mother-in-law!

In a recent conversation about the new season, Rochelle Aytes shared that Mary will be relying heavily on John as her mother’s health worsens.

Mary normally handles everything well as a doctor, but she’s currently overwhelmed with emotion and struggling to cope. She’s completely reliant on John and Watson for support, as this situation is very unusual for her. She speaks with her mother daily, so everyone noticed how quickly she’s been declining and how much she’s needing their help.

Throughout the first season, Watson remained remarkably calm, even as his personal life became chaotic – he even experienced auditory hallucinations of Sherlock Holmes, voiced by Matt Berry. Considering he’s a central character, and given his supportive nature, he naturally seemed like the best person for Mary to turn to for help, both with her personal issues and her work.

Mary and John‘s relationship was central to the first season, but it looks like she’ll be relying on him even more at the beginning of the next one. Actress Rochelle Aytes praised showrunner Craig Sweeny and his writers for creating their special connection.

A lot of the success comes down to Craig’s writing and the team dynamic. There were some initial disagreements, but Mary clearly respects Craig’s medical expertise and prioritizes working with him. It was a bit challenging at first, but everyone involved is mature and able to collaborate effectively.

The actors truly make the story come alive, and Rochelle Aytes had nothing but praise for Morris Chestnut and their work together portraying Mary and John’s relationship. She explained:

Morris is a really great person to work with. He’s always available to talk things through or help solve problems and improve our collaboration. We both understand each other well and are really happy with the quality of the writing we’re receiving.

We’ll soon find out how season two begins for John and Mary, and what’s left of their team after the dramatic events of the first season. The premiere will also introduce Robert Carlyle as Sherlock Holmes, and I’m particularly interested to see how he interacts with Mary. Ever since Carlyle was cast, I’ve wondered about their dynamic. While Watson will likely be thrilled to discover his friend isn’t really gone, Mary has plenty of reasons to be wary of Sherlock.

Don’t miss the season 2 premiere of *Watson* on Monday, October 13th at 10 p.m. Eastern Time, right after the season 8 premiere of *FBI* at 9 p.m. Eastern Time, both airing on CBS. You can also watch the episode the next day on Paramount+, or stream it live with a YouTube TV subscription.
