We Need a New Blade Ongoing Series While We Wait for the MCU

Eric Brooks, more commonly recognized as Blade, plays a crucial role in the Marvel Comics universe. He first appeared during Marvel’s foray into horror comics, specifically in the 1970s. His character often gives the impression of single-handedly defending the Marvel universe against vampires, though this may be an overstatement. However, we find it entertaining! The 1998 film featuring Wesley Snipes attracted a fresh wave of fans, and anticipation for future Blade stories within the Marvel community has only grown since then. Although Blade made a brief appearance in Deadpool & Wolverine, no further Blade movie within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) has been released yet. Given this, it might be an idea for Marvel to introduce a new ongoing comic series featuring Blade while we eagerly wait for his next big-screen adventure.

For years, Marvel has been hinting at a fresh take on the beloved character Blade, having regained the rights in 2011 and expressing interest under Kevin Feige as early as 2016. With the casting of Mahershala Ali for the lead role in 2020, it appeared that the long-awaited project was finally on its way. However, the production process has been marred by numerous setbacks and delays, causing many fans to lose hope for a Blade reboot. Given these circumstances, it’s understandable why fans might assume the worst. To alleviate some of this frustration, Marvel could consider releasing a new comic book series featuring Blade as an alternative means of satisfying eager fans while they continue working on the movie.

Why We Need a New Ongoing Blade Series Now More Than Ever

It’s clear that the comic book genre featuring horror themes is experiencing a resurgence in popularity. Titles such as “Something Is Killing the Children” are garnering significant attention, with their screen adaptations generating even more buzz. Similarly, Marvel series with a darker, horror-infused tone continue to captivate fans, making characters like Ghost Rider consistently popular. It might be beneficial for Marvel to further highlight its horror-focused series and characters, especially Blade.

Regarding Blade, there’s continually an abundance of possibilities regarding his future actions. Known as the legendary vampire hunter, he excels whether working alone or as part of a group. He’s rescued the day countless times, willing to risk his life repeatedly to combat the menace posed by vampires. His backstory infuses him with a personal motivation to tackle this danger, adding depth and appeal for readers. This approach has proven effective, and we hope it continues to thrive rather than evolve or diminish.

Regarding teams, Blade is most famously associated with the Midnight Sons, yet he’s not limited to just that group. In fact, he’s been working with the Avengers relatively recently, which was quite beneficial for them in handling their vampire predicament. Here’s an interesting point: a new ongoing series about Blade could pave the way for additional series in the future, and that’s definitely advantageous. Consider the potential of a contemporary revamp of the Midnight Sons, incorporating newer characters to infuse some fresh energy (the pun wasn’t planned, but it’s quite fitting).

Blade’s More Recent Cameos and Series

While it might seem like Blade has vanished from Marvel Comics, that’s not entirely true. He’s made appearances in various titles such as the Marvel Rivals Infinity Comic (#13), Crypt of Shadows (2024), and more recently, in the Blood Hunt event series in both the main event and Midnight Sons: Blood Hunt (2024). However, it’s correct to say that he hasn’t had a continuous comic series since 2023, with that one only lasting ten issues.

As a devoted cinematic enthusiast, I can’t help but feel that these brief appearances of beloved characters like Blade align with the evolving narrative in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). The exhilaration from witnessing Wesley Snipes’ cameo in Deadpool & Wolverine was undeniable, yet it sparked a subtle undercurrent of concern. A casual remark about being the one and only Blade might have intensified this apprehension, although it could simply be showmanship. Mahershala Ali’s subsequent statements about his absence from the MCU fanned the flames further, yet it’s tough not to sympathize with his desire for discretion. The anticipation must be excruciating, especially for those directly involved; it wouldn’t be surprising if they found this situation personally challenging.

Regardless of perspective, Blade is an exceptional character who continually warrants greater focus than he currently receives. We’re keeping our fingers crossed for a resurgence of Blade in the MCU, however, until then, it’s high time for a fresh comic book series centered around this legendary figure. With no updates on the topic, fans are craving more content, and it would be a missed opportunity for Marvel not to seize this moment.
