‘We Need to Trust Our Instincts’: Expedition 33 Dev’s Next Game Won’t Bow to Fan Pressure

The creators of the popular RPG Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, Sandfall Interactive, have shared some details about how they’re developing their next game.

Following the positive reception to their first game, Sandfall’s developers are feeling a little pressure from fans eager for a sequel, according to COO and production director François Meurisse in an interview with Edge magazine (as reported by GamesRadar). However, Meurisse indicates that the team isn’t overly concerned with meeting those expectations and will largely focus on their own vision for the next game.

Lead writer Jennifer Svedberg-Yen explained that the team will focus on its own vision and values, rather than trying to satisfy external expectations.

We’ve always followed our own instincts and focused on creating things we genuinely love. I’ve noticed that when TV shows or books try too hard to appeal to everyone, they often lose what makes them special. That’s why we believe it’s important to trust our vision and stay true to what we find cool and enjoyable as a studio.

Expedition 33 drew inspiration from classic role-playing games, but ultimately created a unique experience. This resonated with players, leading to strong sales and numerous awards.

The success of their first game has put the team in a strong position as they begin work on their next project. Meurisse explains they’ll be able to dedicate more focused effort to it, and they’re eager to explore some exciting new ideas. Having gained five years of experience as a team, they’re confident they can create something truly special this time around.
