The announcement of Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls is one of the most memorable moments of 2025.
Despite a successful initial closed beta, excitement for the PlayStation 5 and PC fighting game seems to be fading among fans.
If you look closely at discussions among dedicated gamers, you’ll find a lot of criticism of the Sony game. Many players don’t like the four-versus-four gameplay and find the tagging system restrictive.
Arc System Works, a well-known game developer, designed this game to be enjoyable for everyone, from beginners to experienced players. It’s easy to pick up and play, but also has enough complexity to keep dedicated players engaged and challenged.
Competitive players are unhappy with the shared health bar because it reduces the importance of clearly identifying targets. Additionally, team support often feels restricted to just a few actions, such as defending against aerial attacks.
A continuing concern is the limited number of fighters currently revealed – just eight. This leads many players to believe the game won’t have many characters available when it first releases, which is especially worrying for a team-based fighting game where four players compete on each side.
In a recent holiday message, producer Takeshi Yamanaka hinted that more characters will be revealed soon, giving fans hope for a much larger character list in the new year.
He also addressed some of the more negative feedback:
Okay, so we’re still digging through all your comments, but seriously, thanks so much for the feedback! We’re reading everything, the good stuff and the stuff we need to work on. The team is heads-down in development right now, and we’re definitely using your opinions to keep making the game better. We really appreciate you helping us shape it!
We originally planned to release this game in early 2026. However, considering the positive response we’ve received and the lack of new character announcements since the initial reveal, we suspect the project may have been pushed back internally.
ArcSys has done a great job with the core elements of the game. It looks fantastic, has a beautiful art style, and the online play is very smooth. We enjoy the gameplay a lot, but we’re worried it might be too difficult for new players and not have enough depth to keep hardcore players engaged.
Achieving the right balance will be challenging, but it’s crucial for the project’s success.
