When Disney bought 20th Century Fox, it dramatically changed the future of Marvel movies, bringing key characters and franchises back to Marvel Studios. We’ve already seen the Fantastic Four return, but bringing the X-Men back into the Marvel Cinematic Universe has been a more gradual process. Marvel Studios is being careful with the X-Men because they’re so well-known and have always been very successful. Now that the original X-Men actors are confirmed to appear in Avengers: Doomsday, and with Avengers: Secret Wars set to essentially restart the timeline in 2027, Marvel has created a strong setup for a fresh take on the X-Men team in the coming years.
Even though the X-Men are well-known, the idea of mutants hasn’t been a major part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe since it began. To successfully introduce mutants, Marvel Studios will likely start with a team of established characters. This approach will help connect different storylines and give the new team more impact, as it builds on what viewers already know and care about. It also avoids making the universe feel too fragmented, a criticism sometimes leveled at the recent Multiversal Saga. Currently, Kamala Khan (Iman Vellani) and Simon Williams (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II) are the most likely candidates to become the first official members of the X-Men in the MCU.
Ms. Marvel’s New Origins Make Her a Prominent Mutant

The Ms. Marvel TV show officially confirmed that Mutants exist in the main Marvel universe (Earth-616), even though this differs from the original comics. In the comics, Kamala Khan gained her powers from something called the Terrigen Mists and was considered an Inhuman. However, the show specifically used the word “mutation” to explain her abilities. This connection to Mutants was further highlighted by a familiar musical theme from X-Men: The Animated Series, instantly linking Kamala to the world of the X-Men and Charles Xavier.
Following her appearance in Ms. Marvel, Kamala Khan returned in the movie The Marvels. The film ends with a scene where Monica Rambeau finds herself in another universe and meets Hank McCoy, also known as Beast from the X-Men. This moment signals that Marvel Studios is building a storyline where Kamala will explore her Mutant powers and could potentially connect the main Marvel Cinematic Universe with the world of the X-Men.
Bringing Kamala Khan into the X-Men is a smart move, especially considering her continued popularity even though her first movie, The Marvels, didn’t perform well at the box office. Iman Vellani’s performance was widely loved for its sincerity and enthusiasm. Moving Kamala away from the Captain Marvel storyline and into the X-Men allows Marvel Studios to keep this talented young actor and connect her with a more successful franchise. Plus, Kamala’s naturally positive attitude and her position as one of the first new mutants in the MCU make her the perfect character to show us what it’s like for this new team as they try to find their place in a world that doesn’t understand them.
Is Wonder Man a Mutant?

Simon Williams, the main character in the new show Wonder Man, is a strong contender to be one of the first X-Men in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The series portrays his superpowers as something he’s had since birth, a natural part of who he is, which is different from the comic books where his powers came from a lab accident. Wonder Man consistently shows that his strength and resilience are innate, suggesting a biological origin. Though Marvel hasn’t officially called him a Mutant, the show’s focus on a power he can’t control and feels he must conceal resonates with the central ideas behind the X-Men stories.
Abdul-Mateen II’s performance as Simon Williams focuses on the character’s inner turmoil – the struggle of living a double life in a world that distrusts people with superpowers. This experience of prejudice and keeping secrets is central to the Mutant story, making Wonder Man a natural fit for a team protecting those who are different. Officially classifying Wonder Man as a Mutant would give the X-Men a seasoned member who understands how the public views powered individuals and the challenges of fame. His background as an actor balancing a normal career with incredible power could help connect the government’s Damage Control agency with the broader fight for Mutant rights, paving the way for a more cohesive X-Men introduction.
You can now watch all of Wonder Man on Disney+. Avengers: Doomsday will be in theaters starting December 18th.
