Weapons’ Aunt Gladys prequel moves ahead with major update following Amy Madigan’s Oscar win

The horror film Weapons, which became a major conversation starter in 2025, is getting a prequel. The new movie will tell the story of how the memorable character Aunt Gladys came to be.

The unique and captivating film, about the disappearance of a group of schoolchildren during the night, was a commercial success, earning nearly $270 million worldwide.

Amy Madigan’s character, Aunt Gladys, quickly became a hit with viewers because of her unusual makeup and brightly coloured wigs.

Gladys always seemed like a shadowy and manipulative character, quietly controlling events. However, no one could have guessed just how much power she’d ultimately have over the film’s dramatic, yet surprisingly funny, ending.

Madigan won an Oscar this year for her performance as the now-famous horror villain, and viewers will soon learn even more about the character’s story.

Deadline reports that Zach Cregger and Zach Shields are writing a new film currently known as Gladys.

After his successful 2022 horror film, Barbarian, Zach Cregger is writing and directing a new movie called Weapons. He’ll be working with Daniel Shields, known for his work on films like Krampus and Godzilla: King of the Monsters, and actress Lucy Madigan will return for another role.

I was so thrilled at the Oscars this year when Madigan finally won her first Academy Award! It was a really competitive category, and she beat out some amazing performances – Teyana Taylor in ‘One Battle After Another,’ Wunmi Mosaku in ‘Sinners,’ and both Elle Fanning and Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas, who were both nominated for their work in ‘Sentimental Value.’

When she took to the stage, she let out a Gladys-like cackle before declaring: “This is great!”

She expressed her gratitude to Cregger, saying his role was so compelling she immediately wanted to play it. She also thanked the rest of the cast and crew for their work.

She admitted she was a bit shaken up, saying her legs were trembling, before thanking her fellow nominees and her family.

She concluded her speech by lovingly dedicating it to her husband, Ed Harris, a celebrated actor who has been nominated for an Oscar four times, telling him, “I wouldn’t be here without your support.”

Weapons is available to rent or buy.
