Weapons Director’s DC Movie Could Happen, Here’s How

Zach Cregger’s DC movie could wind up happening.

Zach Cregger first directed a feature film on his own in 2022 with ‘Barbarian.’ Before that, he collaborated with Trevor Moore (who sadly passed away in 2021) to co-direct ‘Miss March’ in 2009 and ‘The Civil War on Drugs’ in 2011. Following the success of ‘Barbarian,’ Cregger produced ‘Companion,’ set to release in 2025, and his latest film, ‘Weapons,’ came out in U.S. cinemas this past August.

James Gunn and Peter Safran, who run DC Studios, haven’t announced any plans to produce a film written by Cregger, which he’s described as his best work. He’s previously talked about wanting to make it, but it’s currently not in development at DC.

What is the latest update on Zach Cregger’s DC movie?

A new report from Puck suggests the fate of James Gunn’s DC movie, directed by James Cregger, could hinge on the possible merger between Paramount Skydance and Warner Bros. Discovery. David Ellison, head of Paramount Pictures, is reportedly keen on moving forward with Cregger’s film, and Paramount co-chair Josh Greenstein recently traveled to Prague to discuss the project with Cregger.

According to a report, Cregger expressed interest in writing and directing a film within the DC universe, though it’s unknown which characters would be featured. Greenstein reportedly responded that he’d be happy to help make that project a reality if he could.

Early reports described Cregger’s movie, Henchmen, as the story of a minor criminal in Gotham City who accidentally defeats Batman. This lucky break leads to him becoming a rising star in Gotham’s criminal world. The film was also said to feature appearances by the Joker and Harley Quinn.

Cregger addressed the online buzz surrounding his script, explaining on Double Toasted that it had been exaggerated. He clarified that while he wrote ‘Henchmen,’ a story set in the DC Universe before he created ‘Barbarian,’ it wasn’t a script focused on the Joker and Harley Quinn. He also stated he hadn’t discussed the project with James Gunn or anyone else at DC Studios.
