2025 delivered a fantastic year for horror fans, and just in time for Halloween, one of the most acclaimed movies of the year will be released for home viewing.
I’m so excited that ‘Per New Line Cinema’ is coming to HBO Max on October 24th! If you prefer watching on regular TV, you can catch it on HBO the very next day, October 25th, at 8 pm. It’s amazing how quickly it’s becoming available to stream – just over two and a half months after hitting theaters on August 8th, and only a month and a half since its initial release.
Zach Cregger, the guy behind the surprisingly great *Barbarian* from 2022, is back directing with *Weapons*, and this time he’s really wearing all the hats – he wrote, directed, produced, *and* co-scored it! This new supernatural horror flick has a seriously impressive cast, led by Julia Garner and Josh Brolin. You’ll also spot faces like Alden Ehrenreich, Austin Abrams, Cary Christopher, Toby Huss, Benedict Wong, and Amy Madigan, which definitely adds to the excitement.
Before it even hit theaters, *Weapons* received incredibly positive early reactions. Critics overwhelmingly praised the film, initially giving it a near-perfect score. While the score has slightly dipped, it remains impressively high at 93% based on 370 reviews. Critics generally agree that the director has created a skillfully made and frighteningly suspenseful mystery with *Weapons*, proving he’s a leading talent in the horror genre.
Viewers loved the movie, praising it as both a fantastic horror film and a generally excellent piece of cinema. It earned an 85% approval rating on Popcornmeter and proudly displays both the “Certified Fresh” and “Verified Hot” badges.
The movie’s popularity clearly boosted ticket sales. *Weapons* earned an impressive $266.7 million globally, despite only costing $38 million to make. It performed just below two other hit horror films: *Final Destination: Bloodlines*, which made $314.9 million worldwide, and *Sinners*, with $366.6 million.
Weapons centers around the puzzling case of 17 children who vanished from a single classroom, all escaping together on the very same night.
The Weapons Universe Continues
The recent horror film featured Aunt Gladys, who was initially intended to be a central character, not a minor one. Director Cregger recently shared that he had previously written an entire script focused on Gladys’s story. This earlier version was told through the eyes of a child, depicting a strange woman taking him home and essentially replacing his parents. The story followed the child’s attempt to escape her control, but Cregger put the script aside years ago.
The director plans to revisit the story with the same character. He stated in September that discussions with Warner Bros. are ongoing and that a compelling story is in development. He assured fans it’s a genuine project he’s enthusiastic about.
Weapons will be available to stream on Oct. 25 on HBO Max.
