As a dedicated movie enthusiast, I can’t help but express my excitement about one of the captivating characters in the spine-tingling 2025 horror movie, “Weapons.” Directed by the talented Zach Cregger, this film delves into the haunting mystery surrounding the simultaneous disappearance of 17 school children from their homes during the dead of night. The small town was left reeling in despair, but the story takes an intriguing turn with Academy Award nominee Amy Madigan’s portrayal of Gladys Lilly, the enigmatic aunt of Alex (played by Cary Christopher), the only child in the class who didn’t vanish. I can hardly wait to see how this chilling mystery unfolds!
Using multiple perspectives to unfold the chilling enigma at the core of a small Pennsylvania town, the film “Weapons” delves into mysteries inspired by Cregger’s personal experiences. Joining the cast are Julia Garner as Justine Gandy, the prime suspect in the disappearance and a dedicated teacher, Josh Brolin as Archer, a frantic parent of one of the children, and Paul Morgan, a local police officer who becomes involved in the search for the missing kids. The film “Weapons” hit theaters on August 8.
Who is Gladys in Weapons?
Warning: The rest of this article contains spoilers for the plot and ending of Weapons.
In the movie “Weapons”, Gladys is initially presented as Alex’s elderly aunt who takes care of him following his parents’ deaths from consumption. However, it’s later unveiled that this is merely a disguise, with Gladys being the main figure behind the disappearances of the missing children.
It is shown through flashbacks that Alex’s parents initially welcomed Gladys, who was gravely ill, into their home due to her dire condition. Upon arriving, Gladys brought with her an intriguing potted plant, and soon after, she began scheming to seize control of the household.
Through the practice of sorcery, Gladys allegedly manipulated Alex’s parents, transforming them into empty-minded puppets who obeyed her commands. Subsequently, she exploited this control over Alex’s parents, using their lives as leverage to coerce him. If he didn’t deliver a personal item belonging to each of his classmates, she threatened to cause harm between them.
Gladys employed these items to create a fresh enchantment that transported all 17 students from Alex’s class to her residence, where she kept them asleep in the basement. Assuming the role of Alex’s official caretaker during the police inquiry, she donned an unusual wig and attire to conceal her aging appearance and divert any scrutiny away from herself and Alex’s relatives.
How Does Gladys’ Magic & Possession Work?
One significant plot twist in “Weapons” is unveiled when it’s shown that the children are subjected to witchcraft. Although the background of Gladys and her magic isn’t thoroughly detailed in this horror film, certain rules regarding the rituals she performs and their effects on victims are set up.
To dominate others, Gladys must obtain something belonging to her chosen target. She then weaves this item with a twig from her potted tree and adds a droplet of her own blood. Once she breaks the twig, the victim’s will is no longer under their control, turning them into an empty vessel that follows her commands. The only way to free these controlled individuals is either by ending their life or by breaking the spell through immersing the item in a bowl of water. In addition to this method, Gladys employs other witchcraft practices like using salt lines to confine spirits in the novel Weapons.
Gladys relies on ritualistic possession to sustain her own vitality, essentially drawing strength from those she dominates. Upon first entering Alex’s household, she was near death but regained vigor by taking control of Alex’s parents. As time passed and her renewed strength began to fade, she performed a spell on Alex’s 17 classmates, which substantially increased her energy levels.
Even after Gladys loses control over her victims, it’s clear that they do not revert back to their original selves. The conclusion of “Weapons” suggests that those influenced by Gladys were fundamentally altered. Alex’s parents and the abducted children exhibited a lack of response, with the postscript indicating that most of the kids never regained their ability to speak following their ordeal. This appears to be a result of Gladys taking away their vitality while they were under her control, resulting in an irreversible transformation.
What Happens to Gladys at the End of Weapons?
In the end, Gladys ultimately faces punishment for her heinous acts. At the climax, Alex manages to retrieve one of the magical wands from the potted tree and uses a strand of Gladys’ hair to summon the children against her.
In line with the title “Weapons“, the youngsters inexorably transform into the instruments that bring about Gladys’ downfall, pursuing her relentlessly through the town’s streets before finally overwhelming her in a violent climax, which tragically ends her life.
After Gladys’ passing, the influence she held over the children and Alex’s parents dissipates, allowing them to reunite with their respective families. Yet, it’s clear that this experience has left an indelible mark on them, as they are forever changed.
