2025 was a fantastic year for horror movies, and the standout success was undoubtedly “Weapons.” The film earned an incredible $263 million worldwide on a budget of just $40 million, and now a prequel is in the works.
Zach Cregger, the writer and director, has revealed plans for a prequel movie focusing on the terrifying character of Aunt Gladys, brilliantly portrayed by Amy Madigan. In an interview with Fangoria magazine, Cregger confirmed he’s been discussing the project with Warner Bros. and that a solid story is already developed. He emphasized the project is genuine, stating he had the idea well before the original movie’s release and was prepared to develop it.
In an interview with IO9, the filmmakers revealed that a portion of the film was dedicated to exploring the history of the character Gladys. Reportedly, director Creeger gave actor Madigan two different backstory options for her (which they’re keeping secret to avoid spoilers!), and they hope to develop this backstory further in a future prequel.
Director Craig Brewer is preparing to film a Resident Evil movie and then a sci-fi film called ‘Flood,’ so it’s unclear if he’ll also direct the prequel to ‘Weapons.’ As Halloween approaches, Aunt Gladys is expected to be a popular costume choice. Leo Satkovich, head of the makeup department, shared his surprise at the character’s success: “It’s still surreal to me, and I’m still trying to understand it… We knew we were creating something special, but I didn’t anticipate how much of a cultural phenomenon it would become.”
