Greetings on this day! The initial four episodes from the two-part season 2 of “Wednesday” were unveiled on Netflix this very Wednesday. Under the guidance of director Tim Burton, the series titled “Here We Woe Again” resumed at the peculiar academy Nevermore following an action-packed summer for our melancholic protagonist Wednesday Addams (played by Jenna Ortega), as well as other members of the Addams Family. Spending her summer break honing her psychic skills using Goody’s (once again played by Ortega) spell book, she’s now just as legendary at Nevermore as her mother, Morticia Addams (portrayed by Catherine Zeta-Jones).
Even the psychic goth girl with pigtails might have been taken aback: In contrast to its first season, Wednesday 2 received a rather chilling 86% approval from critics on Rotten Tomatoes. Surprisingly, this second season is more warmly welcomed compared to the initial release of Wednesday in 2022, which only managed an icy 73%.
According to Kelly Lawler from USA Today, it’s been three years since Jenna Ortega portrayed her eerie interpretation of an Addams Family character in Netflix’s Wednesday, and it appears that the show needed this length of time for a makeover. She notes that while the first season was Netflix’s most-watched English language series and even inspired the popular Wednesday dance on social media, at times it felt unfinished and superficial. Lawler describes the initial season as a rough draft with glimpses of greatness, but now, she says, the story is much more focused and, in her opinion, intriguing.
Marco Vito Oddo from ComicBook characterizes “Wednesday 2” as “larger, more daring, and somewhat inflated,” with the initial four-episode segment wrapping up as an “irresistibly captivating horror offering” that still struggles a bit due to excessive content.
Clint Worthington pens an analysis for RogerEbert.com about the “creepier, unusual” Wednesday 2, stating that while its dark humor persists, the narrative pace is impacted by the overly familiar Netflix hour-long format. He further notes that the ongoing issues with Wednesday are inherent to the Netflix formula rather than the unique aspects of the storyline or talented cast. The show continues to navigate the transition from a horror sitcom family to the investigative structure of a murder mystery.
According to TheWrap’s Michel Ghanem, while it might not match the greatness of “Stranger Things”, having Tim Burton back as director for two episodes makes it an enjoyable series to watch. On the other hand, Daniel Fienberg from The Hollywood Reporter found Part 1 of this show to be overly crowded, stating that the new season of “Wednesday” is so commonplace that distinguishing it from similar themes in “The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina”, “Percy Jackson and the Olympians”, and the entirety of “Harry Potter” was a struggle.
Even though the eight-episode season was divided into two halves and offered extended screen time for guest stars like Morticia, Gomez (Luis Guzmán), Pugsley (Isaac Ordonez), and Uncle Fester (Fred Armisen), this doesn’t lessen the intricate details, eerie atmosphere, or the powerful portrayal of her character by Variety AU‘s Aramide Tinubu notes.
In the second season, the creators and producers, Alfred Gough and Miles Millar, described Wednesday’s storyline as having deeper and intricate layers as she maneuvers through family, friendships, fresh enigmas, and recurring enemies, ultimately thrusting her into another term at Nevermore. They also announced that the series has been granted a third season.
Wednesday season 2 is now streaming on Netflix.
