As a dedicated cinephile, I must say that the comeback of Wednesday Season 2 on Netflix is largely satisfying, though there are aspects in Part 1 that slightly mar the experience. Following an almost three-year hiatus between seasons, Jenna Ortega’s enigmatic lead character is back to unravel fresh mysteries within the spooky halls of Nevermore Academy. True to its word, this second installment serves up more chilling tales, and expands the roles of the other Addams Family members, particularly Morticia and Pugsley, who now share the limelight with Wednesday due to their presence at Nevermore Academy.
The series, known for its mystical school backdrop and widespread acclaim, can be compared to Netflix’s take on the Harry Potter saga. It stars a lead character who is tasked with exposing mysterious events, working alongside friends in this endeavor, yet frequently encounters resistance from their instructors. Regrettably, its second season mirrors some of the issues found in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, as it tends to be overly predictable and follows a familiar pattern instead of introducing fresh concepts. Note: This discussion may contain mild spoilers for Wednesday Season 2, Part 1.
On a Wednesday, she returns to Nevermore, celebrated as a savior for protecting the school, yet still feeling out of place, much like a fish out of water. A new enigma unfolds, connected to an obscure group that hasn’t been seen in years. These puzzles intertwine, pushing Wednesday to participate in school events where she can display her talents and triumph, all while uncovering the truth. The Hyde reappears as a significant menace, endangering her allies, and there’s a deceased character who is somehow involved (in part of it).
Wednesday, hailed as a hero for saving the school, finds herself an outsider once again at Nevermore. A fresh mystery arises, linked to a forgotten group. These mysteries converge, compelling Wednesday to take part in school activities that allow her to shine and win the day, while she continues her quest for answers. The Hyde resurfaces as a major threat, putting her friends at risk, and there’s a character believed to be dead who is implicated (in part of it).

Similar to how Chamber of Secrets struggles with repeating the same broad plot about Harry solving a mystery linked to Lord Voldemort, Wednesday Season 2 faces challenges in expanding beyond its restrictive framework. Despite this, it’s important to note that there are still many positive aspects – the cast is exceptional (with Joanna Lumley as Grandmama Frump being a standout), the atmosphere is deliciously dark and gothic, reminiscent of Tim Burton’s style, and it offers an effortless, enjoyable viewing experience.
Just like “Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets”, not being inherently poor, benefited significantly from evolving and expanding its narrative scope. It was through developing its characters and world that the series found greater depth, rather than relying solely on familiar tropes. If “Wednesday” Season 2, Part 2 can manage this growth or at least strive for it in future seasons, it could reach new heights of excellence. Considering Netflix’s investment in the show due to its success, it may be tempting to stick with proven strategies, but by surpassing them, it has the potential to achieve greatness.
Wednesday Season 2, Part 1 is now streaming on Netflix. Part 2 releases on September 3rd, 2025.
