‘Welcome to Derry’ Creator Could Still Revisit ‘IT’ with New Supercut

With the first season of the TV show It: Welcome to Derry coming to an end, creator Andy Muschietti is hinting at more stories within the It universe. While he’s not discussing a second season of the HBO show just yet, he has confirmed a long-standing rumor that started with the It films released in the late 2010s: a combined ‘supercut’ of the 2017 and 2019 movies. Muschietti says this is now a possibility.

Before finishing up production on Welcome to Derry, the director and his sister, producer Barbara Muschietti, chatted with fans during a live question-and-answer session on Reddit. Many people complimented the pair for creating a compelling and detailed addition to Stephen King’s original story, while others were eager to learn more details about the project.

A fan asked Andy about the possibility of a supercut of the It movies – a single, over six-hour-long version combining both films. They were curious about an extended cut that would blend It and It Chapter Two into one continuous experience, using footage that didn’t make the final cut. Andy confirmed he had considered the idea.

It’s still a major goal of mine. We’ve been so focused on this current project that we haven’t had a chance to make it happen yet. Hopefully, we can soon!

Warning: This contains spoilers for It: Welcome to Derry. Following the success of the It movies, the creators decided to tell more of Stephen King’s story on television. The result, the prequel It: Welcome to Derry, is a fantastic addition to the films, bringing back Bill Skarsgård as Pennywise and adding important layers to King’s already rich world. The show’s first season is so strong that a second season feels inevitable, and it delivers a truly terrifying experience.

The show has consistently surprised viewers with its unpredictable plot twists. The first episode featured the shocking deaths of key characters, and the episode “The Black Spot” demonstrated that no character is safe in 1962 Derry. When asked about the difficult task of writing and filming the deaths of beloved characters – particularly the talented young actors – Andy responded to the challenges of Season 1.

Stories can be told in many ways, each evoking different feelings. I especially love films that really move me – I don’t mind shedding a tear while watching them. Richie’s death was crucial to crafting a truly heartbreaking love story, one that would resonate with audiences far more deeply than a happy ending could have.

The shocking movie theater shooting at the end of the first episode wasn’t just about violence; it was designed to show viewers that no character is safe, and to keep them hooked by making the story unpredictable.
