The HBO series Welcome to Derry continues to build on the chilling world created by Stephen King, and the latest episode, number 6, has taken the story to a particularly frightening place. Those familiar with King’s novel – and even viewers of the previous film adaptations – now understand that the next episode will show one of the most terrifying events in Derry’s history: the outbreak of The Black Spot.
Because Welcome to Derry has spent so much time developing its characters and history, the destruction of the Black Spot club will be even more shocking and upsetting than the frightening nightmare scene in the 2017 IT movie. That scene showed young Mike Hanlon seeing burning hands reaching out from the club’s doors, a vision that deeply traumatized his family. Will the series finally show this devastating event happen?
Welcome To Derry Puts A Dark New Spin On The Black Spot Burning

The story explores family connections, most notably the surprising relationship between Pennywise the Dancing Clown and Ingrid Kersh, who is revealed to be his daughter, Periwinkle. She’s been secretly watching Lilly Bainbridge and her friends. Meanwhile, Ronnie Grogan reconnects with her father, Hank, who is in hiding at a recreational house called the “Black Spot” – built by Private Dick Hallorann as a safe haven for Black soldiers. Despite knowing Hank is there, the soldiers decide to have a party. Lilly, Ronnie, Marge, Rich, Major Hanlon, and his wife Charlotte all attend.
It’s terrifying to realize that nobody in our group knows what’s about to happen. Apparently, the ex-police chief, Clint Bowers, is furious about being fired. He’s been stirring up trouble among the white men in town, telling them that Hank Grogan is hiding out at the Black Spot. Now, he’s leading a group of masked men in a whole caravan of cars, and they’re all armed with guns, heading right for us!
Episode 7 of Welcome to Derry, titled “The Black Spot,” clearly signals a turning point in the story. This episode needs to be a thrilling, intense survival experience, while also weaving together elements from Stephen King’s wider universe and setting the stage for the IT movies. If it succeeds, Welcome to Derry has the potential to become one of the best prequels or spinoffs in the franchise.
Don’t miss episode 7, “The Black Spot,” of IT: Welcome to Derry on Sunday, December 7th, on HBO and HBO Max.
