Episode 4 of Welcome to Derry showed a heartwarming connection growing between Ingrid and Lily, but this could be a deliberate distraction. It might secretly tie into the terrifying character of Mrs. Kersh from It: Chapter 2. The series began with Pennywise transforming into a frightening family inside a car.
This demonstrated the entity’s ability to use complex psychological manipulation, and its manifestations aren’t just limited to the forms seen in the two It movies – like those of lepers, haunted paintings, and clowns. However, viewers familiar with the 1990 miniseries or the 2019 sequel, It: Chapter Two, likely already knew this.
Both timelines show adult Beverly visiting Mrs. Kersh, an elderly woman from Derry who appears to have a hidden link to Pennywise. It quickly becomes clear, however, that Mrs. Kersh is actually another disguise used by the monster – Pennywise pretended to be the old woman to trick Beverly and capture her.
Welcome to Derry’s Ingrid Could Be It: Chapter Two’s Mrs. Kersh
Okay, so episode 4 of Welcome to Derry definitely had some seriously creepy moments, but the biggest shock wasn’t about Mrs. Kersh at all. Still, the episode managed to bring her back into things in a really unsettling, almost quiet way. We see Lily end up in an asylum, and she connects with this nurse, Ingrid – played by Madeleine Stowe, who seems nice enough at first. It’s a subtle thing, but it definitely felt connected to Mrs. Kersh’s story.
Lily met with Ingrid at a diner for coffee and explained the group’s plan to defeat Pennywise. Ingrid listened and offered some general advice and support. Interestingly, Lily always seems to be alone when she speaks with Ingrid’s character, Stowe.
They have two private conversations: first in an empty hospital room, and then at a diner. This raises the possibility that Ingrid isn’t who she seems, and might be another disguise Pennywise uses to torment Lily – perhaps even an earlier form of Mrs. Kersh, especially considering Lily recently confided in her.
Ingrid constantly brings up her dad when she speaks with Lily, and Pennywise has already disguised himself as Lily’s deceased father to torment her. This suggests Ingrid might be the same character as Mrs. Kersh from It: Chapter Two and the original miniseries, where the man believed to be her father, Bob Grey, was actually Pennywise in disguise, a reveal that happened when Beverly visited.
Welcome to Derry Episode 4 Already Hinted That Ingrid Could Be Imaginary
Although the most heartbreaking part of Welcome to Derry involves the unjust imprisonment and possible murder of Ronnie’s father, Hank, Lily’s story is also deeply upsetting. After witnessing her father’s horrific death in a canning machine accident, Lily was institutionalized due to her unstable behavior.
Lily is trapped in a difficult situation: if she tries to warn anyone about Pennywise, adults will likely commit her back to the mental institution. But she can’t simply ignore the fact that Pennywise is becoming more and more visible. She’s already been wrongly sent to the asylum twice – once after Pennywise appeared to mock her inside a pickle jar, and again at the end of episode four.
Ingrid is the only adult who’s taken Lily seriously about Pennywise, but she’s only ever interacted with Lily herself. This raises the possibility that Ingrid is a figment of Lily’s imagination. However, the story has already shown that Lily isn’t mentally unstable, which makes that explanation unlikely.
You know, as I’ve been thinking about it, it’s starting to feel like Ingrid isn’t just some random person – she’s actually a disguise Pennywise is using to mess with Lily directly. It’s like he’s pretending to be a friend to lead her into trouble. And honestly, that’s terrifying because it suggests Pennywise is getting way more powerful. He can hold a human form for hours now without slipping up, which is a huge step up from what we’ve seen before. It’s like he’s evolving, and that doesn’t bode well for anyone.
Welcome to Derry’s Ingrid and Mrs. Kersh Have One Thing In Common
MovieStillsDB
Pennywise briefly disguises himself as people to frighten others, but he doesn’t fully become another person and pretend to be them for extended periods. However, he can take control of living people, essentially possessing them.
This pattern appears with both Mrs. Kersh in It: Chapter 2 and Ingrid in Welcome to Derry. It’s unlikely Mrs. Kersh was always a monstrous clown; she lived at her home for years before the encounter with Beverly, seemingly without issue, before transforming during their conversation.
The tragic deaths in Welcome to Derry are already deeply upsetting, but there’s another possible threat to Lily. It’s possible that Ingrid, while appearing human, is actually controlled by Pennywise and being used to target Lily in a more insidious way.
Because Pennywise doesn’t age like a normal person when appearing as a human, the orderly from the 1960s could be the same elderly woman we see in It: Chapter 2. Although Ingrid currently seems harmless, her habit of speaking with Lily in private suggests she might secretly be the frightening old villain from It: Chapter 2, as hinted at in Welcome to Derry.
