The post-credits scene in The Fantastic Four: First Steps is a typical Marvel Cinematic Universe tease, introducing a new major villain and hinting at future storylines in Phase 6. These after-credits scenes, a staple of the MCU, had become less effective lately, often relying on surprising casting choices or setting up plotlines that never materialized. However, both Thunderbolts and First Steps are revitalizing this approach with more direct connections to what’s coming next, particularly with the scene suggesting Doctor Doom (Robert Downey Jr.) is about to kidnap Franklin Richards.
It seems Victor von Doom was interested in the Fantastic Four’s costumes, though the movie doesn’t explain why. We might learn more in December when the first trailer for Avengers: Doomsday is expected to be shown before Avatar: Fire and Ash. Since the post-credits scene for Fantastic Four was actually filmed on the set of Doomsday by the directors, the trailer could give us some clues about Doom’s intentions.
Why Does Doctor Doom Want Franklin Richards?
With all the excitement surrounding the upcoming Doom movie and Robert Downey Jr.’s return, and considering the title is Doomsday, fans are expecting the Avengers 5 teaser to heavily feature the villain. He’s a major draw for the film, but Marvel needs to showcase him effectively without revealing too much of the plot. Given what we already know – that the villain has interacted with Franklin Richards and seemingly taken him (and his family) to another universe – the teaser could easily expand on this storyline.
Doctor Doom likely wants Franklin Richards because of the boy’s immense and unique powers. Franklin is an incredibly powerful mutant in the Marvel universe, capable of altering reality on a scale that extends beyond our world. We see a small example of this when he brings his mother, Sue Storm, back to life, but his full potential is far greater – and that’s what Doom may be trying to take advantage of in Avengers: Doomsday.
The 2015 Marvel comic event Secret Wars featured the near-destruction of the entire multiverse, leaving only two universes on a collision course. Doctor Doom saved these universes by combining them into a single planet called Battleworld and reshaping reality to become a godlike ruler, using the power of Molecule Man. Now that the Marvel Cinematic Universe has introduced the multiverse and the danger of universes colliding, a similar event could happen. Instead of introducing a new powerful character, the MCU could use the existing powers of Franklin Richards, and have Doom utilize them, mirroring the comic storyline.
Doom might actually believe he’s the good guy – that he’s the only one who can save all of reality. This idea fits with how past villains like Thanos saw themselves, believing they were making the tough choices needed to save everything. Considering Doom’s huge ego, it’s likely he sees things this way, but on an even grander, multiversal scale. If Marvel is going this route, the Doomsday trailer should offer some clues, and help explain the post-credits scene in The Fantastic Four: First Steps and how Franklin Richards will play a role in the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe.
You can now watch The Fantastic Four: First Steps on Disney+. And mark your calendars for Avengers: Doomsday, which comes to theaters on December 18, 2026.
