‘What 45-Year-Old Wants Him?’ The View Co-Hosts Don’t Hold Back On The Golden Bachelor Saying He Won’t Date Women Over 60

In discussions surrounding contentious pop culture subjects, it’s well-known that the hosts on The View always have something to say. And as expected, they’ve shared some robust opinions about the stir caused by the choice of Mel Owens, 66, as the lead for The Golden Bachelor Season 2, set to air later this year according to the 2025 TV schedule. The panel, including Whoopi Goldberg and Joy Behar, have voiced their thoughts on his reluctance towards dating women of similar age.

Mel Owens, a past NFL linebacker, made a statement on a podcast in June about his time on The Bachelorette. He shared that before filming, he informed the producers he would exclude any women aged 60 or above from his season, and also expressed disinterest towards those with artificial hips or wigs. Joy Behar, however, approached this comment from a psychological perspective, suggesting:

It’s clear he’s conveying his thoughts. In essence, it seems many men fear death. And so do we all, as no one wishes for death. Interestingly, some men often prefer younger partners, which gives them a sense of eternal life.

Sara Haines argued that it wasn’t a complex issue, and men were drawn to younger women primarily for their physical attributes. Alyssa Farah Griffin seemed open to evaluating Mel Owens based on his actions within the ABC reality dating series, but her cautious tone suggested she was apprehensive about what might transpire, given her initial observations.

I’ll wait a while before meeting Mel, since we haven’t interacted so far; however, it seems that a person’s spirit can remain lively and energetic even in their 60s, just as much as they were in their 20s. Nevertheless, I’m not entirely certain about his true intentions.

In response, Joy Behar appeared to concur, suggesting that his remarks implied he was seeking a bit of extra affection, using the phrase “just wanted ‘to get a little on the side'” as a reference to his displeasure towards individuals with augmented hips.

Sunny Hostin brought up an angle on aging women that Mel Owens may have overlooked, and she asked why he prefers dating women as old as 45.

I have a problem with the idea of artificial hips, as having them replaced or getting knee replacements means you become “bionic,” capable of doing things your natural joints couldn’t do before. However, I find it odd that he’s drawing a line at 60 but is open to surgery for people as young as 45. It seems strange to me that a 45-year-old would want such a procedure, especially since it’s often associated with older individuals. In my opinion, it’s just not logical or reasonable.

When Joy Behar noted that Mel Owens likely has wealth, Sara Haines replied that discussions about age, money, and appearance are nothing unusual. In essence, she agreed with OG’s The Bachelor Gerry Turner by advocating for an open-minded approach to these situations.

These patterns have been recurring throughout history. People often seek relationships for financial gain. Sometimes, it’s assumed that women are after a specific income level, while men might be attracted to a certain age or physique. He verbalized this point explicitly. I would advise him to stay receptive, as what you think you desire rarely presents itself in the expected way. So, always keep your eyes open for new possibilities.

During the debate on “The Golden Bachelor,” Whoopi Goldberg largely kept her thoughts to herself. However, she concluded the conversation emphatically by referencing karma and the divine, stating:

It seems reasonable that someone with a background of playing in the NFL might not be discussing matters they’re uncomfortable with, given their history of physical endurance. Their body has already taken so many hits; it’s understandable they wouldn’t want to face more discomfort. However, life often works in mysterious ways, and sometimes we get what we don’t want – that’s just how things can be.

It’s definitely intriguing to find out how things unfold when “The Golden Bachelor” makes its debut. The network ABC has introduced us to the bios of 25 possible contestants for Mel Owens’ season, with ages spanning from 58 to 77. Surprisingly, just three women fall within Owens’ preferred age range of “45 to 60,” including one woman aged 58 and two aged 60. Eight of the 25 potential suitors are either the same age as Owens or older.

As a film enthusiast, I can’t wait to catch the final lineup when The Golden Bachelor Season 2 hits the screens. Curious to hear what the ladies on The View have to say about it. If you’re keen, it all kicks off at 8 p.m. ET on Tuesday, September 24, only on ABC, or if you prefer streaming, with a Hulu subscription, the episode will be available the next day.
