What a Mistborn Video Game Could Look Like (Now That It Might Actually Happen)

Brandon Sanderson is a leading epic fantasy author of the last decade, known for popular series like Mistborn, which started in 2006. As his popularity has grown, fans have often wished for video games based on his stories. A Mistborn game was actually started once, but it was cancelled. Now, Sanderson is exploring the possibility of developing a new Mistborn video game.

Fantasy author Brandon Sanderson recently provided a detailed update on his current and future projects. He reflected on 2025 and then shared what fans can anticipate in 2026 and beyond, including several novels. Excitingly, he also revealed he’s actively trying to develop a video game based on his Mistborn series. Sanderson says there’s been significant interest from major game developers, and he’s in discussions to finally bring a Mistborn game to life. While the project is still in its early stages, it seems more promising than previous attempts, leaving fans eager to learn more about what it might entail.

Mistborn’s Presence in Gaming & What It Might Mean for a Video Game Adaptation

While a full video game hasn’t been released yet, the world of Mistborn is starting to appear in games. In 2024, Brotherwise Games released Mistborn: The Deckbuilding Game, where players become Allomancers and use different metals to gain powerful abilities. The game includes well-known characters and beautiful artwork from the Mistborn series.

Video game developers could definitely take inspiration from this, especially when figuring out how to represent Allomancy powers in a game. However, even though deckbuilding games are popular, it doesn’t seem like that’s the approach Brandon Sanderson has in mind for the Mistborn game. This suggests the game will likely be unique and designed specifically for the video game format.

The Mistborn Adventure Game, a tabletop role-playing game released in 2011, combines storytelling with dice rolls. Based on the Mistborn novels, the game allows players to create unique characters within the world of Scadrial, using elements like social class, skills, and magical powers. While the final expansion came out in 2023, the game remains available for fans.

In addition to this initial tabletop RPG, a new RPG set in the Cosmere universe is planned for Fall 2026. It will feature campaign settings based on both the Stormlight Archive and Mistborn series. This new system will be similar to the D20 system, using skills tests and character talent trees. I believe a future video game adaptation will likely play like this RPG. Games such as Baldur’s Gate 3 have shown how successful video games based on TTRPGs like D&D can be. However, we also need to consider Brandon Sanderson’s earlier ideas for a Mistborn video game.

What Happened to Mistborn: Birthright & How This New Project Might Be Different

The first Mistborn video game, called Mistborn: Birthright, was announced in 2012. Author Brandon Sanderson described it as a quick-paced action game with role-playing elements, exciting Allomancy powers, and strong writing. The game was planned to be a prequel, telling a new story set in the early days of the Final Empire. Sadly, it was never made. This was mainly because of financial problems with their partner, Little Orbit, who couldn’t secure enough funding to create the game they had planned with Sanderson.

A lot has happened since 2012, for both Brandon Sanderson and the gaming industry. Sanderson’s become even more popular, which should make it easier to get a new project funded. Combined with his recent comments, this suggests another Mistborn role-playing game is likely. We don’t know exactly how it will compare to the original Mistborn: Birthright concept, but that earlier attempt does give us a good idea of what to expect.

Brandon Sanderson likely made significant progress on a story that was originally intended to be a prequel to Birthright, but it was never published. This means a potential Mistborn video game could easily function as a new prequel, introducing fresh story elements instead of adapting the existing novels. It’s probable players will control a Mistborn character, possibly one already created or a custom character they design. While the initial Birthright concept featured a predetermined hero, modern gaming leans towards character customization, so the game will likely offer more freedom in creating the main character.

A future Mistborn video game will probably be an action RPG. However, given the success of the Mistborn tabletop RPG and Baldur’s Gate 3, a turn-based RPG similar to the Mistborn Adventure Game is also a possibility. Both styles could work well, and the final decision will likely depend on which game studio Brandon Sanderson chooses to collaborate with. He’s currently considering several options and has received interest from prominent companies in the video game industry.

This new game will probably be quite different from the original vision Sanderson and Little Orbit had back in 2011. A lot has changed for both the Mistborn series and the video game industry since then. Hopefully, it will be developed by either a large publisher with experience adapting popular fantasy stories, or a team that truly understands and loves the world of Mistborn.
