You don’t usually feel sympathy for Tom Cruise. He’s famous for doing his own daring stunts – jumping into stadiums, scaling skyscrapers like Dubai’s Burj Khalifa, or even just riding a motorcycle in sunglasses – and always seems effortlessly cool, like a mix of classic cool characters. But there’s one situation where that might change.
Tom Cruise appeared on Oprah Winfrey’s show in 2005, supposedly to talk about his new movie. However, he used the opportunity to express his feelings for Katie Holmes, whom he would later marry. He excitedly shook Oprah’s shoulders, pumped his fist, and ultimately jumped onto the couch. The audience, and Oprah herself, were stunned. She famously commented, “I’ve never seen you act like this before,” capturing everyone’s surprise.
For a fleeting moment, Tom Cruise became an internet sensation – before that phrase even existed. He joined the ranks of other unexpected viral stars like Noel Edmonds, who earnestly spoke to his own statue, Holly Willoughby’s empathetic check-in with viewers, Guy Goma’s accidental TV appearance, and Judy Finnigan’s famously daring wardrobe malfunction.
We’ve all seen those TV moments that are so awkward, you almost have to look away – but can’t. A new 5-part documentary series highlights many of these, and yes, it even includes me as one of the people watching! But why are we so fascinated by cringe-worthy clips? What makes them so captivating?
Look, let’s be honest, there’s a part of all of us that gets a little satisfaction when things go wrong for others – it’s just human nature. But what really grabbed me about this show isn’t just that. TV usually tries to present a perfectly polished, almost fake version of life. So when something real happens, when people mess up or act unpredictably, it’s shockingly good. It’s jarring, sure, but it’s also incredibly relatable because it reminds you that, hey, real life isn’t a script!
We don’t enjoy seeing someone clearly hurt – like when a young Taylor Swift was unexpectedly interrupted by Kanye West at the 2009 VMAs, or when X Factor judges harshly criticized a contestant – but these moments often feel like a welcome change from the usual predictable and safe content we see.
These memorable clips are mostly from older television shows. Today, with so much media available, very few things create the shared experiences – the “watercooler moments” – that really capture everyone’s attention.
It feels like we’re constantly distracted by minor scandals – an angry contestant throwing something on Britain’s Got Talent, for example. But these moments aren’t even that unusual anymore, as similar clips are readily available on TikTok. What used to be mistakes kept hidden from the public – saved for behind-the-scenes viewing – is now deliberately included, shared widely, and called ‘content’.
A significant shift has also taken place. Unlike in the past, when public figures generally followed a shared sense of what was right and wrong, many now prioritize online engagement – like clicks, views, and comments – as the ultimate measure of their success. This applies to everyone from politicians and TV personalities to those who fabricate their identities and online scammers.
In today’s world, it seems negative attention doesn’t really hurt anyone, and the idea of being permanently ‘canceled’ is a myth. The fact that we’ve reached this point – where even embarrassing incidents like a wardrobe malfunction or public displays of affection barely cause a ripple – is actually more concerning than the incidents themselves.
