The end of Benson and Stabler doesn’t have to be especially heinous.
Christopher Meloni, known for his role as Detective Elliot Stabler in the Law & Order series, hopes that the eventual conclusion to the partnership between his character and Mariska Hargitay’s Captain Olivia Benson will be memorable and meaningful.
Christopher recently told People magazine that he believes both characters, Stabler and Benson, deserve a happy ending. “I think both characters, Stabler and Benson, should ride off into the sunset,” he said in an interview published on November 8th.
Viewers first met Detectives Benson and Stabler when the popular crime drama began in 1999. Ever since, many fans have hoped for a romantic connection between the characters. These wishes intensified when Christopher Meloni returned as Stabler in 2021, starring in the Organized Crime series on Peacock after appearing on SVU following his exit from the original show in 2011.
Christopher admitted it would be difficult to turn Benson and Stabler’s relationship romantic, emphasizing just how ‘hard’ it would be. However, he also pointed out there’s a definite chemistry and attraction already present in their friendship.
The actor explained that the two have a deep understanding of each other, even without saying much. They’ve tried several times to change the nature of their relationship, but haven’t succeeded.
Christopher says returning to the Law & Order franchise was easy because of his long-standing friendship with Mariska Hargitay. He believes their connection off-screen helped them fall back into working together naturally after more than ten years apart.
He described the experience of reuniting as something special, explaining to People that it brings back memories of who they used to be. He emphasized that their shared history and connection are unlike anything anyone else could understand or experience.

He continued, saying it’s a moment of recognizing shared experience – acknowledging that both people have lived a long time and are okay with that. It’s a feeling of understanding how far they’ve come and where they are now, and it’s powerful.
Mariska understands the dynamic between her character and Christopher’s, particularly after Stabler confessed his love in the emotional season 27 premiere of SVU.
I was so moved by what Chris did in that scene! Mariska explained in her interview with Today that he just instinctively said what felt real to the moment. It really hit me because we’d all lost someone so important – our leader, really, someone both she and I learned so much from. It was a hugely emotional scene, marking both the end of an era and the start of something new, and Chris just captured that perfectly.
You know, I’ve always believed that loss has a strange way of bringing people closer. It’s a really emotional time, and we naturally reach out and reconnect with those we care about. In this particular situation, it felt like someone just needed to express what was in their heart, to really say it, and I think allowing that vulnerability is so important.
She playfully referenced her ex’s feelings, then jokingly pointed out, “Plus, it’s obvious Stabler is in love with Benson!”
Viewers will have to be patient for a satisfying conclusion to Stabler and Benson’s story, as the show is continuing with its 27th season. Read on to find out when other popular shows will be back!

As a true crime enthusiast, I was completely hooked by this new docuseries. It really pulls back the curtain on what can happen even in places that seem perfectly normal. Over three parts, it digs into a genuinely unsettling case, and what I appreciated most was hearing directly from the people involved – those who investigated, those connected to the events, and even the town residents still grappling with everything that came out. It’s a powerful reminder that secrets don’t stay buried forever, and the truth always finds a way to surface.
