As a big fan of Ghost of Tsushima, I was really intrigued when Ghost of Yotei was announced. It’s not a direct sequel, but the connection to the first game is definitely there. I was surprised to hear that Jin Sakai wouldn’t be returning, and it wasn’t a mystery! Sucker Punch made it clear that Ghost of Yotei takes place hundreds of years after Tsushima, in a completely different region of Japan. Let’s face it, unless Jin discovered some kind of immortality trick, he’d be long gone by then and wouldn’t be showing up in this new game!
Light spoilers follow for Ghost of Yotei below.
Although their tales are separate, Jin and Atsu’s stories connect in Ghost of Yotei. The game includes many hidden references, or Easter eggs, to other games made by Sucker Punch, such as the Sly Cooper and Infamous series. However, Ghost of Tsushima receives the most focus. The PS4 game was incredibly popular, even leading Sony to begin work on a live-action movie that has been in development for several years. Fans loved Jin Sakai’s story, and his legacy continues in Ghost of Yotei.
Ghost of Yotei Has a Side Quest Dedicated to Jin Sakai
The most straightforward reference to Jin appears during the main storyline. While investigating a cave inhabited by the Nine Tails, Atsu discovers a letter. This letter tells Lord Saito that a group is working on Wolfsbane, a poison utilized by Jin Sakai in Ghost of Tsushima. The letter mentions that Wolfsbane was a potent weapon used long ago against the Mongols to halt the invasion of Tsushima, and it attributes its creation to a single individual. Essentially, this serves as a historical connection, illustrating that Jin’s questionable tactics influenced his future enemies.
Things become more engaging in the Ghost of Yotei side quest. After progressing through the main story and unlocking the southern region of Ezo, you’ll encounter Ugetsu, a wandering storyteller. He shares information about various opportunities within the game. He explains he’s searching for a katana called the Storm Blade, but he’s forgotten its history. He hopes finding it will reveal its origins.
He then sends you on a journey to find it, aided by a dark-colored fox – a rare sight compared to the red foxes of Ezo. While searching, you’ll discover the emblem of the Saki clan and a small building containing Jin’s saddle, aged weapons, and his helmet. Eventually, you’ll locate the Storm Blade within a cave, and later, a house nestled on a peaceful hill. It’s a beautiful place, covered in white flowers. Inside, you’ll find the remains of adoption papers for the Shimura clan, a dagger inscribed with the name Yuma, and an antique flute.
Beyond the house, there’s a striking red tree, reminiscent of the famous one in Ghost of Tsushima. A group called the Nine Tails are gathered there, and they want to take the sword from you, believing it possesses a unique power. Once you’ve defeated them, you’ll discover a grave at the tree’s base, and Ugetsu will return to your side. He shares the tale of a nameless samurai who gave up the traditional path to prevent a Mongol invasion. Unfortunately, his actions led to his exile from Tsushima, forcing him to leave his home.
His fate remains a mystery, but many believe he lived out his last years in Ezo. Considering everything we’ve learned, it’s very likely Jin Sakai traveled to Ezo and ultimately died there. A black mask, his trademark item, rests before his grave, and players can claim it to wear as their own.
This is a great way to get answers to some remaining questions about Jin Sakai in Ghost of Yotei. Although many years of his life are still a mystery, we know his story seems to have ended calmly. It’s uncertain if we’ll ever see Jin Sakai again, but thankfully, Sucker Punch honored him with this new game.
