What Happened to the Pregnant Women in Stranger Things Season 5 Officially Confirmed

The Duffer brothers have now revealed what happened to the pregnant women held captive in the Upside Down during the final season of Stranger Things. The show, which has become a huge cultural phenomenon and a key program for Netflix over the past ten years, concluded on December 31, 2025, with a lengthy finale episode. While the episode tied up most storylines, some questions remained, particularly regarding the fate of Dr. Kay’s test subjects in the Upside Down.

In season 5, episode 5 of Stranger Things (“Shock Jock”), Kali (Linnea Berthelsen) shares details about her escape from Dr. Kay’s lab, including discovering a lab filled with pregnant women in the Upside Down. This raised questions about whether those women were harmed when the heroes destroyed the Upside Down. However, according to a recent interview with The Wrap, the Duffer brothers clarified that the women had already died because Kali’s blood powers didn’t work on them.

Eleven’s decision is truly brave and selfless. Even though it means leaving her friends, she’s preventing other children from suffering the same trauma she did. Consider what Kay was attempting with the pregnant women – they all tragically died because the process failed. But if it had worked, dozens more children would have been created like Eleven, destined to be exploited and turned into weapons.

Why Were There Pregnant Women in the Upside Down in Stranger Things Season 5?

In “Shock Jock,” Kali reveals that Dr. Kay and her team kidnapped her and took her to the Upside Down to study her blood. Dr. Kay wanted to give pregnant women Kali’s blood, hoping to create a new generation of children with psychic abilities – similar to the experiments Dr. Martin Brenner conducted before the first season of Stranger Things. Unfortunately, Kali’s blood wasn’t compatible, and all the pregnant women involved became ill and died before the Upside Down was ultimately destroyed.

Kay wanted to recreate the experiment that resulted in the birth of Eight, Eleven (played by Millie Bobby Brown), and their other siblings. However, Dr. Brenner’s initial experiments were more effective because he used the blood of Henry Creel (Jamie Campbell Bower). As revealed in the stage play Stranger Things: The First Shadow, Eight, Eleven, and the others gained their powers from being infused with Henry’s blood, which had been changed after he encountered a piece of the Mind Flayer and spent 12 hours in the alternate dimension known as the Abyss when he was a child.

One’s blood was effective in creating children with psychic abilities, but Eight’s wasn’t as potent, leading Kay to focus on Eleven during the fifth season of Stranger Things. Eleven’s powers closely resemble One’s, and she’s consistently demonstrated being the most powerful of her siblings. However, Eleven still escaped Kay’s grasp. Now that Kay can no longer utilize Eleven’s blood, her experiments have been halted, which is unfortunate considering the sacrifices made by the pregnant women in the Upside Down for this research.
