A new Splinter Cell game is currently being made, but details are scarce. The popular stealth series hasn’t seen a release in over ten years. Originally launched in the early 2000s by Ubisoft, Splinter Cell put players in the role of Sam Fisher, a secret agent who had to infiltrate enemy locations to protect the world. The series included seven games in total, with Splinter Cell: Blacklist being the most recent in 2013. While Blacklist was well-received, it didn’t achieve strong sales.
After a long hiatus, the Splinter Cell series left fans wanting more. While always highly regarded – and home to some of the best stealth games ever – Ubisoft shifted its focus to large open-world games and ongoing live-service titles. Other established franchises, like Ghost Recon, embraced this open-world style, but it didn’t suit Splinter Cell. Though Sam Fisher made guest appearances in games like Ghost Recon Wildlands and Rainbow Six Siege, this only heightened fans’ disappointment, as it felt like the Splinter Cell series itself was being ignored.
What’s Going on With the Splinter Cell Remake?

Fans had been asking for a new Splinter Cell game for years, and Ubisoft finally responded. In 2021, they announced a remake was in the very early stages of development. Instead of keeping it a secret until it was finished, Ubisoft decided to share the news early to keep fans informed and engaged.
It’s been nearly four years since the remake of Splinter Cell was announced, and we’ve only seen concept art so far. There’s been no gameplay footage, no detailed updates on development, and not even a single official screenshot or image. This complete lack of news is becoming more noticeable, especially as other previously quiet games, like Marvel’s Wolverine, are now starting to reveal themselves.
Recently, concerns have emerged about the development of the new Splinter Cell remake. Tech4gamers discovered a Ubisoft job posting seeking a game director, which is unusual after four years of work on the project. While it’s not uncommon for a director to leave a game during development, they’re typically replaced by someone already involved with the studio. It’s rare to see a developer actively searching for an external hire to fill that role, raising questions about the project’s current status.

When a game director leaves a project during development, it often suggests there are problems. The new director hired for the Splinter Cell remake will likely make significant changes to the gameplay or story. While they could maintain the original vision, bringing in a new director usually means they’re looking for a fresh perspective.
It looks like the remake of Splinter Cell is likely still a couple of years off, based on a recent job posting. While some people were hoping for a release next year, a recent change in leadership might delay that. However, Ubisoft hasn’t cancelled the project, and they seem committed to finishing it, even with the new director and any potential challenges. They believe bringing on a new director is a good move for the game.
Good news for Splinter Cell fans: a new anime series, Splinter Cell: Deathwatch, is now available on Netflix and offers a great continuation of Sam Fisher’s story. With a second season already confirmed, fans are hoping Ubisoft releases the remake before the next season of the show arrives.
