What Meghan Markle Misses About U.K. After Leaving With Prince Harry

Distance has made the heart grow fonder for Meghan Markle.

As a dedicated follower, I must confess that there’s something about living in the United Kingdom that I truly miss – and it’s none other than the radio station Magic. The Duchess of Sussex shared this sentiment during her chat with Tan France on season two of ‘With Love, Meghan’, airing August 26th.

In England, despite Tan expressing appreciation for the radio by saying “our radio is fantastic,” he couldn’t resist teasing Meghan about her music preferences, humorously commenting, “I must tell you this openly, but that sounds more like an old-fashioned radio station to me.

Despite the fact that the actress from Suits (who moved to Montecito, California with her husband Prince Harry after they stepped down as senior royals in 2020) didn’t take offense, she actually reaffirmed her affection for London’s radio station 105.4 FM.

She chuckled, admitting, “I’m basically that nostalgic grandma.” Her car radio’s preferred station goes by the name ‘Mom Jeans.’ It’s filled with old, catchy tunes that bring back memories, some of which you might have forgotten about.

Despite Meghan, who is mom to Prince Archie (age 5) and Princess Lili (age 3), both with Harry, trying to maintain her composure and enjoy her preferred British music, there are aspects of American culture that hold a special place in her heart. At 44 years old, she candidly shared this fondness for McDonald’s during the Netflix episode, expressing how deeply her affection for their mini apple pies runs.

Instead of hitting the gym after a great audition, as most actresses might do, she preferred to reward herself with a drive-through apple pie from McDonald’s.

Yet, even though her auditioning years have passed, Meghan hasn’t let go of her burning love for culinary arts. She shared that it was Rachael Ray whom she used to watch diligently during her college days, learning the art of cooking from her shows.

Currently, one of her notable dishes is a whole roasted chicken, as she reminisced, “I roasted a chicken on the very night my husband proposed to me; roast chicken was our choice for our wedding feast; I prepare it at least once a week.

But the recipe presented a challenge to her while she was still living in the U.K. with Harry.

In her confession, Meghan shared that when she cooked a roast chicken for her future husband, she was still struggling with understanding temperature conversions between Celsius and Fahrenheit. As a result, the chicken she prepared that evening turned out to be less than delicious, to put it mildly.

However, even though a mishap involving a bird didn’t spoil Harry’s proposal in 2017 (a year prior to their wedding), he managed to keep it intact.

As a devoted follower, I’d like to echo Meghan’s sentiments: “The essence lies in understanding that even if your cooking isn’t perfect, someone will always value the thoughtfulness behind it.

But the recipe presented a challenge to her while she was still living in the U.K. with Harry.

Meghan confessed, “On the occasion when I cooked a roast chicken for my future spouse, I was facing numerous hurdles in understanding the conversion between Celsius and Fahrenheit. That evening’s chicken dish turned out to be a dismal failure, if I may say so myself.

However, even though a mishap involving a bird didn’t spoil Harry’s proposal in 2017 (a year before their wedding), he still managed to carry it off smoothly.

Meghan noted that even if the chicken isn’t perfect, someone will still appreciate the effort you put into making it.

Meghan Markle shared in season two that she made husband Prince Harry and his friends custom baseball hats bearing “PH40″—his initials and age—in honor of his 40th birthday in September 2024.

Prior to setting off on a Malibu getaway with friend Heather Dorak, Meghan discussed the transformation she has undergone since her twenties.

In our initial encounter, our bond was formed over shared interests in wellness and physical fitness. We used to run side by side, and now life has taken us on similar paths as mothers. Both of us have two children, which makes our husbands close friends as well. It’s heartwarming to observe the growth and evolution of this friendship.

The former Suits star went on to share how her thoughts about aging have evolved as well.

In her words, she expressed that it’s a wonderful journey to navigate life’s complexities during your 20s, gain clarity in your 30s, and reach a satisfying stage in life by the time you’re 40. She added that this process is essential for personal growth, and it’s fascinating to observe how women become more confident and comfortable with their identity and bodies as they age.

In our latest gathering, my friends and I shared cookies and wine – a new tradition for us. This simple act feels like we’re stepping into a fresh chapter, and I can’t help but feel, “We’re navigating through a distinctly new phase in our friendship.

Meghan shared that it had been nearly two decades since she last saw her co-star on “Deal or No Deal”, but they rekindled their connection a few years ago after she initiated contact.

When they finally got together in season two, the pair reminisced about old times on set.

“I remember all having to stand in line,” Meghan recalled, “to get our lashes put on in a row.”

Despite not meeting since then, the Duchess of Sussex confessed that she has been following Chrissy’s professional journey closely.

Meghan said to her, “After I left that show, about a year went by and then you became well-known. I couldn’t believe it when I saw you on the cover of Sports Illustrated… You were so kind.

Following Meghan’s unintentional mistake, calling the Hawthorn flower “Honsworth,” Chrissy playfully suggested that perhaps the royal was disclosing the name of her hidden third child in jest.

As the Cravings cookbook author noted, “I was like, ‘You have a kid named Honsworth?'”

In response, Meghan playfully quipped, “That must be a child you haven’t heard of. By the way, if I had been able to keep a secret like that, it would truly be impressive.

In the second season, Harry momentarily joined forces with Meghan and Clare Smyth, the culinary mastermind behind their 2018 wedding, when Clare visited California for a special episode. The trio snapped a photo together with the caption “Unplanned Visit!”.

As a devoted admirer, I’d like to share Meghan’s heartfelt sentiments about her beloved son. She refers to herself and Prince Harry as parents to Archie and Lilibet. In her words, she describes Archie, our “Prince,” as the epitome of tender, sweet, and adorable children that have ever graced our world.

“I always wanted to be a mom,” Meghan added. “I love it. It’s better than I even expected.”

Meghan had to face the music after her move from London to California.

She confessed to Tan France that what she truly misses the most from the U.K. is the radio station Magic, making her feel a bit like an old-fashioned grandmother.

These days, she noted her playlists can range from soul to country music.

She mentioned that her preferred radio station in the car goes by the name ‘Mom Jeans.’ These songs are nostalgic and fun to sing along to, making one forget they ever heard them before.

Cooking might be one of Meghan’s love languages, but her dishes don’t always turn out egg-celent.

She shared, “I prepared a roasted chicken on the very night my partner proposed; roast chicken was also our wedding meal selection. Now, I cook it at least once every seven days. Incidentally, at that time when I made the roast chicken for my now-husband, I was struggling immensely with converting temperatures from Celsius to Fahrenheit.

In her admission, she shared that the chicken she prepared the previous night was simply awful, really disappointing. Essentially, what she meant was, even if you prepare something terribly, people will still value the effort put in.

During Clare’s episode, she playfully noted that Harry often teases her by referring to her as “very American” because she omits the ‘h’ in words like “herbs,” thus making it sound as if the letter doesn’t exist.

As a lifestyle connoisseur, I’ll share a tidbit from my personal experiences: During my pregnancy, I consulted an Ayurvedic physician, who specializes in ancient Indian medicine practices. However, let me confess to my esteemed guest, Samin Nosrat, that the advice I received involved consuming an overwhelming quantity of dates. Oh, the number of dates!

During season one, it became clear that Meghan has a fondness for preserves, but what’s interesting is that her passion for making them intensified after she and Harry settled down in their residence in Montecito, California.

She mentioned during the second episode of With Love, Meghan, as she plucked berries, that these vines had been here even before we moved in. This is essentially what sparked my interest in creating jams and preserves.

As for Meghan’s favorite preserve?

The Duchess of Sussex shared that her fondness for apple butter stems from her grandmother’s tradition of making it. She believes her children, Archie and Lilinow, will associate this with the comforting scent of slowly cooked fruit that fills their home after school, a sign that she is once again preparing preserves.

In fact, Meghan said Lili has even tried her hand at preserve-making.

In episode five, I had the pleasure of working alongside Lili as we crafted a delicious batch of strawberry preserve together. She was the one who painstakingly gathered all those fresh berries with me. At one point, she took charge and said, “No no, mama. I’ll do it.” With eagerness to learn, she helped by stirring and mashing the fruit. I ensured that the hot mixture stayed out of her reach while she skillfully poured it in. Her pride was evident as she took ownership of this task, making the experience incredibly rewarding for me.

However, it appears Harry, who made a cameo on season one, has some culinary skills too.

In the fifth episode, Meghan casually mentioned that her husband, known as H, is an exceptional chef, particularly skilled at making delicious breakfasts.

The duchess also offered some insight into how the Duke of Sussex likes to season his food.

Meghan shared in the second episode that her husband always adds salt to his food before even tasting it. As a result, she’s learned to prepare meals with less salt.

In terms of her personal fashion taste, Meghan expressed a preference for blending high-end and affordable items, which is often referred to as the “high-low” approach.

In the first season of her previous role on Suits, the actress described her attire during an episode where she had Mindy Kaling over for a tea party. She revealed that she wore pants from Zara, a top by Loro Piana, and a sweater by Jenni Kayne.

The show highlights Meghan’s passion for hosting, cooking, gardening, and home decoration, but it also reveals some of her lesser-known interests as well.

For instance, in one episode, she hosted a game night for her friends.

As a lifestyle enthusiast, I’ve recently embarked on an exciting journey with my friends to master the ancient game of Mahjong. Originating in China during the 1800s, we’ve chosen to play the American version, and it’s been a delightful experience.

What draws me to this captivating pastime isn’t just the game itself-although it’s certainly entertaining-but rather the camaraderie that comes with learning something new alongside my friends. As we gather around the table, Mahjong serves as the backdrop for strengthening connections and fostering friendships that expand beyond the game.

In a different occasion, the creator of Tatcha, Vicky Tsai, mentioned that Meghan Markle enjoys playing pickleball. Meanwhile, it was the duchess herself who shared some of her preferred music genres.

In the fifth episode, Meghan mentioned that she enjoys listening to a great deal of 1970’s soft rock, yacht rock, and soul music, as well as French tunes suited for dinner parties.

And when it come to food, she said she has a “very, very high tolerance” for spice.

Despite our modest upbringing, we traveled extensively as children because my mother was a travel agent. We explored countless flavors and destinations. My mother used to make gumbo and other Soul food dishes that were bursting with flavor and spice. Now, I’m introducing these tastes to my family, and I find myself consistently drawn to dishes with a strong kick of heat.

In the second episode of its inaugural season, Meghan reminisced about her upbringing that was filled with frequent meals from fast food joints as well as ready-to-eat TV dinners.

Back then, it seemed so ordinary,” she recalled in episode two, “with microwaveable children’s meals divided into sections… I was raised on such fare, spending my time watching Jeopardy! and consuming fast food frequently.

Her favorites at the time?

Meghan mentioned that she frequently enjoyed Pollo Loco, Taco Bell (with extra hot sauce on their Mexican pizzas), and Jack in the Box, as her mother was fond of their taccos.

But, those weren’t the only recollections Meghan reminisced about from her early years. Additionally, she talked about her experiences as a Girl Scout.

She shared during the fourth episode that she had been a Girl Scout for many years. Her scouting journey began when she was around five or six as a Daisy, and she sold numerous boxes of cookies. Her mother served as the troop leader for Troop 949.

Despite relinquishing active roles within the royal family in 2020, Harry and Meghan maintained their titles as Duke and Duchess of Sussex.

And in With Love, Meghan, she explained why the Sussex name is so meaningful to her.

In the second episode, Meghan explained to Mindy, “It’s quite amusing that you continue to refer to me as Meghan Markle.” Now that she’s part of the Sussex family, she added, “You have children and you say, ‘No, I share my name with them.’ I didn’t realize it then, but now it holds such significance for me. It feels so meaningful to express, ‘This is our unique family name, our little family name.’

Speaking of Archie and Lili, Meghan offered a few insights into their world in the series.

The mom of two confided that her children share her passion for gardening, pointing out they possess their own equipment and are quite dedicated to it. Additionally, she shared stories about her daughter’s fondness for pink and a special cleaning tune she sings.

In episode five, Meghan said, “Always tidy up as you work. And guess what? Lili even turned that into a catchy tune – ‘Clean, clean, clean, clean, clean as you go’.

Furthermore, Meghan mentioned sharing the experience of making sun tea with Archie, as well as their fishing trip where he managed to catch a trout. Moreover, she expressed her passion for cooking together with her kids.

In the fifth episode, she expressed that it’s deeply important for her students to experience and remember this place, as it is such a significant part of what she hopes they will learn. She said, “Ah, just like Mama made it.

Long before she was an actress or a duchess, Meghan had her first job at an ice cream shop.

She recalled that she was 13 years old and her initial job was at Humphrey Yogart, as stated in episode five of With Love, Meghan.

Later on, Meghan helped make doughnuts.

In episode three, she reminisced about her childhood, saying, “Doughnuts in particular take me back to my younger years. I used to work at a quaint doughnut shop called Lil Orbits Donuts. Instead of regular doughnut holes, they made miniature ones that were incredibly small. These petite doughnuts would be sold at various craft fairs, and I was the one who helped.

And when she was in college, Meghan worked at a bar in Chicago.

The Northwestern University graduate casually mentioned in episode seven that after completing two majors, she planned to move to Chicago and work as a coat-check girl for some extra income. However, her friends suggested she could instead become a cocktail waitress, implying a more prestigious position.

However, following her perplexity over a customer’s martini request, Meghan remarked that her superior suggested, “Perhaps it would be best for you to return to your role as a coat-check attendant.

Additionally, it’s worth noting that Meghan has shared her past experiences which include conducting gift-wrapping workshops, leading bookmaking courses at Paper Source, and serving as a hostess at the Sunset Blvd restaurant, Mirabelle.

In episode four, I found myself immersed in an unforgettable gathering, graciously hosted by the extraordinary Nacho Figueras and his equally remarkable wife, Delfina Blaquier. As we savored the moments together, I couldn’t help but reminisce about my time spent abroad, reliving the incredible experiences that continue to hold a special place in my heart.

In Argentina, my affection for the place felt particularly strong because it brought back memories of California in many aspects, with its mountains and the vibrant joy of living outdoors. The duchess shared this sentiment, having spent just a short period there while interning at the U.S. embassy but still cherishing her time in Argentina.

In a nutshell, Meghan portrayed Rachel Zane on Suits from 2011 to 2018, and that moment when she learned she’d be relocating to Toronto for the part has remained etched in her memory.

She commented on episode two that it’s been picked up there, referring to Toronto. That means it has been filmed there. Interesting! One season in Toronto, great. If it continues for another season, will my life be relocated to this new location? Fortunately, I have fondness for Canada and have always tried to extend invitations to the cast or people I meet at the dog park to visit.

In fact, her costar Abigail Spencer appears in one of the With Love, Meghan episodes.

In January 2025, Meghan announced her beloved dog, Guy, passed away.

In the Netflix show, the lovable beagle was seen frequently, and it’s been revealed that Meghan has expressed fondness for him on numerous occasions.

In episode four, she declared, “I’d go to any length for Guy, and he’s well aware of that.” He can have anything because he adapts to whatever role you need him to play on a given day-he’s my loving one, my jokester, my mischievous one, always my pampered one.

And he was always by her side.

In the fifth episode, I shared that Guy is an ever-present companion in my life. He’s not just a friend; he’s more like my shadow, a constant presence who’s been by my side for an incredibly long time. I first met Guy when I resided in Toronto, and his journey began in the woods of Kentucky. Since then, we’ve moved together from the U.K., back to Canada, and all the way to California. Needless to say, he has quite a tale or two to share.

After the last episode of season one, Meghan paid tribute by stating that the series was dedicated with affection to Guy.
