What Netflix’s Warner Bros. Acquisition Means For HBO

Now that Netflix is buying Warner Bros., many are wondering if popular shows like Game of Thrones will soon be available on Netflix. Netflix really led the way in making streaming the most common way people watch movies and TV shows these days.

HBO has always been known for creating some of the most critically acclaimed and well-made shows on television. The recent merger between Netflix and Warner Bros. is likely to affect HBO, as many of its shows will now be available on Netflix alongside the streaming giant’s existing content.

This situation could be tricky. The two studios have very different ways of creating content, and it’s uncertain how their existing shows and movies will be affected. There’s also a question of whether Netflix will quickly try to capitalize on popular brands to attract more subscribers.

HBO Will Likely Remain Unchanged

HBO will probably remain a distinct brand, continuing to function somewhat independently. As part of Warner Bros., it’s always had more flexibility than the studio as a whole. We can expect Netflix to operate in a similar way – as a separate entity within a larger company.

Whether under Warner Bros. Discovery or Netflix, there’s always a possibility the new owner might want to make changes to HBO’s operations or personnel. However, drastically altering HBO doesn’t seem likely, considering its consistent success and popularity within Warner Bros. Discovery.

As a film and TV fan, I honestly think Netflix would be smarter to keep the HBO name around. HBO has built up such a strong reputation for quality – people expect great things when they see that brand. Netflix could let HBO continue doing what it does best – making amazing shows – and then get all that content on their platform. It’s a win-win, really. It would be like having a special ‘HBO’ section on Netflix, instantly signaling premium content.

Netflix could learn from Disney+ by creating a dedicated section for its high-quality HBO content. Like Disney+ organizes content from Hulu, Marvel, and other brands, Netflix could use a special tile to keep the HBO shows separate and easy to find.

This allows Netflix to instantly offer a large collection of well-known and highly-rated shows and movies, particularly in an area where they’ve historically faced challenges.

HBO Is Safe, But HBO Max’s Future Is In Check

Considering everything, it appears Netflix should allow HBO to continue operating with a lot of independence. However, that approach wouldn’t work for Warner Bros.’ streaming service, HBO Max.

Netflix is currently the most popular streaming service worldwide, boasting the largest number of subscribers. Amazon Prime Video comes in second, with Disney+ and HBO Max also being major players. Recently, Netflix has grown even stronger by acquiring one of its main rivals.

Netflix doesn’t aim to simply compete in the streaming market; it wants to be the clear leader. Instead of battling HBO Max for viewers, it would be a smarter move for Netflix to acquire HBO Max and integrate its content, perhaps by using a special category or visual cue within the Netflix app to show where the content originates.

Eventually, Netflix probably aims to combine all its services into a single, unified experience. However, for now, it’s smart for them to focus on incorporating a platform they’ve long competed with directly into their primary website.

What Netflix Buying Warner Bros. Means For Game Of Thrones

Naturally, this involves highlighting some of HBO Max’s most well-known and beloved shows on their service. That’s why shows like Game of Thrones will likely appear on the streaming platform, and even though they’re associated with HBO, Netflix now controls the rights to that content.

Even though House of the Dragon is successful and has been renewed through a fourth season on HBO, Netflix will probably want to develop its own unique versions of any future shows within the Game of Thrones universe.

It might not be branded as a “Netflix Original” like shows such as Stranger Things or Wednesday, but Netflix will likely be credited as a producer. Expect to see the Netflix logo on anything related to these shows in the future.

With the acquisition, significant changes are expected for shows currently produced by Warner Bros. and HBO. Netflix operates differently than its predecessor, so these shows will likely evolve. Given the huge success of Game of Thrones, it’s probable that Netflix will prioritize its continued production.
