What REALLY happened with Geri Halliwell-Horner and Naga Munchetty: KATIE HIND reveals ‘abhorrent’ behaviour and vicious briefing war tearing BBC Breakfast apart as insiders flood her inbox to tell sorry story

This week, the atmosphere on-screen has been determinedly cosy and jovial.

However, let’s be clear: although BBC Breakfast may appear harmonious on screen, it’s a different story off camera. Allegiances are being formed among even the most recognized presenters like Naga Munchetty and their editors such as Richard Frediani. The divide is between those backing Naga’s assertive style and those supporting Richard’s more abrasive approach.

This week, the simmering hostility between the duo escalated and became noticeable to the general public, as Naga reported Frediani’s alleged bullying actions to their superiors.

To put it straightforwardly, I found myself at a breaking point. Naga, acting with conviction, chose to address the alleged inappropriate conduct by our editor, which was deemed unacceptable by many. This was not just about me; it was about standing up for my junior colleagues who were being unfairly treated and stepped on by Team Frediani.

Following my choice to engage with Frediani, I’ve found myself swiftly facing some personal repercussions – now, an intense briefing battle against Naga is underway.

Upon deciding to tackle Frediani, I quickly discovered that there would be personal implications – now, a heated briefing duel with Naga has commenced.

So, who will come out on top?

On Wednesday, the initial move in the breakfast contest was made, as Charlie Stayt, one of the hosts on Naga, showed up at the BBC’s headquarters in London to discuss matters with his superiors.

Typically, Charlie would spend his workday at the Corporation’s northern base in Salford. However, today, he found himself being driven by a chauffeur from his home in Twickenham, south-west London, to an immediate meeting to address the significant disagreement between his co-star and his editor.

Charlie, who is 63 years old, isn’t going to be the only one facing a meeting with higher-ups. Other crew members on the show are also expected to meet with the senior executives at BBC and HR as they conduct an investigation into Richard Frediani. I’ve heard that some staff members have already been contacted, or will soon be, to discuss their experiences regarding this matter.

Frediani is currently taking an extended break from work following numerous allegations against him, some of which were found valid, while others were not substantiated.

People who know him mention that he’s ‘eager to get back to work’ and is counting on his coworkers supporting him during the inquiry.

There’s no certainty that everyone believes this, but some insiders from the program suggest that Naga, being 50 years old, is essentially being used as a ‘stand-in’ for Frediani, who has been serving as Breakfast’s editor since 2019, to shoulder the blame.

His close-knit group of favored associates, primarily consisting of white, heterosexual males, seemed to foster an environment of “old boys’ network” bias.

If Frediani returns from his extended leave, which is presumably tied to the ongoing investigation, it may become impossible for Naga to maintain her current position.

A single source indicates that due to Naga’s blunt speaking style and straightforward nature, she became an obvious target for those supporting Frediani. Essentially, she was ripe for being drawn into this dispute.

old allegations against Naga are being repeatedly brought up to portray her negatively and divert attention from Frediani.’

‘But the truth is that most of the staff on Breakfast find Naga really quite pleasant.

It’s quite clear where this is originating from. If Frediani reappears, it’s highly likely that Naga will follow soon after.

‘We could be looking at it being a “him or her” situation.’

A part of the intense criticism towards Naga can be observed in recent reports suggesting she faced disciplinary actions from BBC authorities due to two instances over a span of three years. One of these incidents involved allegations of bullying towards a junior colleague, which were reportedly unsubstantiated.

On Thursday, the previously criticized meeting took an even deeper dive into past records when it became known that BBC leaders had to issue an apology to Geri Halliwell-Horner in 2023, following a rather uncomfortable interview with Naga and Charlie. This ex-Spice Girl was taken aback when Naga inquired: “Is it not the case that you dislike being interviewed?

Following the conclusion of the segment, it’s alleged that Geri, aged 52, stated that she had no intention of participating in the show alongside that duo ever again.

Peer beneath the surface a bit, and you’ll find a subtler image unfolds: Geri graced Breakfast to publicize her newest book.

Naga questioned Geri about whether she had investigated her interviewers prior to their conversation, whereas Charlie claimed that Geri frequently ‘accused’ or ‘blamed’ others during their discussion.

During our conversation, Naga mentioned: ‘It seems like you’ve taken the time to learn about us before joining us, isn’t that correct?’

Charlie then jumped in and said: ‘Also, you point your finger quite a lot, to be honest.’

Taken aback, she responded, “That came off as impolite! I apologize, Charlie.” However, Charlie directly asked, “Aren’t you comfortable with the interview process?

Breakfast experts note that once more, Naga has found herself unfairly criticized, despite both Charlie and she being part of the interview discussion.

It’s important to point out that Frediani’s actions have consistently drawn unfavorable notice. In fact, I disclosed back in April 2020, only a few months into his tenure at the Corporation, that there were already concerns about his aggressive management approach due to complaints that had been lodged.

During the brief span after his arrival, there emerged a string of complaints concerning a work environment perceived as intimidating and bullying on the Breakfast program. This, in turn, caused several long-standing employees to resign from their positions.

A worker, preferring to stay unidentified, shared with me that the environment had turned ‘toxic’ and resembled an ‘old-school male clique’.

It was stated that: ‘It’s becoming common for people to cry at work and during their commute. Some individuals are more favored, and this is clearly communicated to everyone in the newsroom about whom these favorites are.’

Approximately two months back, I shared that Frediani had been involved in at least two instances of alleged misconduct. One complaint came from a woman whose allegation was validated following claims she was physically shaken by him during a tense argument within the newsroom last year.

According to a report, it’s usually the women who suffer most at the hands of Frediani and his group. They are frequently subjected to public humiliation and verbal abuse.

As a lifestyle expert, I’m thrilled to share that I have earned the backing of two esteemed female Breakfast show hosts: Nina Warhurst and Sally Nugent. It’s been an incredible journey working with Nina, transforming her into a key anchor of our program. Additionally, I’ve built a strong rapport with Sally since she joined as a presenter in 2021. Together, we continue to enrich the Breakfast show experience for our audience.

Stand-in host Jon Kay is also said to be affiliated to Frediani.

It just so happens that each of them serves as anchors for the rebooted News at One broadcast, a position that Frediani took over from the BBC’s news and current affairs CEO, Deborah Turness, last year.

The work done by Frediani on News at One sparked anger among employees who viewed it as management favoring his unacceptable actions. Despite the need to remain neutral, Turness reportedly has a fondness for Frediani, having known him from when he was in his twenties.

Other BBC colleagues have likewise endorsed Frediani, stating: ‘He isn’t a bully in any sense, and the truth will eventually emerge. He’s an exceptional leader and was – and continues to be – admired profoundly by the staff, who appreciate his dedication, skills, and journalistic aspirations. He has garnered impressive audiences and secured the first ever Bafta for Breakfast. While he can be forceful and outspoken, he puts in tremendous effort for his team and fosters growth.’

One individual remarked: ‘Indeed, he’s traditional and may sometimes come across as abrasive, but it’s all for the sake of creating exceptional TV.’

Team Naga, in contrast, is less high profile – but she believes she has ‘the truth on her side’.

Regarding Charlie Stayt, it’s been a common topic that there might be tension between him and Naga. However, Naga has always maintained that they are friends.

After Charlie’s trip to the BBC, he didn’t appear on his usual couch beside Naga during Thursday’s broadcast, noticeably missing.

The situation raises the questions: On which side does Charlie align himself, and what information did he disclose to his superiors? However, according to a source from the show, Charlie merely wants to focus on his work. He would prefer that all this commotion had never started. He’s not fond of the drama.

For now, I’m assured the saga won’t die down anytime soon.

‘We’re far from a ceasefire,’ concedes one BBC insider wearily.
