There was no shortage of pop culture moments in 2006.
Back in 2006, Nelly Furtado’s “Promiscuous” was a club hit, families were watching Taylor Hicks win on American Idol, and popular movies included Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest and Mission: Impossible III.
The Oscars had Hollywood stars eagerly anticipating the winners. The 78th Academy Awards featured strong contenders like Brokeback Mountain, Capote, and Munich, and celebrities arrived on the red carpet sporting the iconic styles of 2006.
Oh my gosh, award season was amazing! Everyone was wearing such gorgeous, flowy dresses, and the colors were so vibrant. But Keira Knightley… she just completely stole the show. I mean, she was nominated for Pride & Prejudice, which she deserved to win, and she wore this Vera Wang gown… it was burgundy taffeta, so rich and stunning, and it flared out like a mermaid! The top was all pleated and it just… it was perfection. I’ve been obsessed ever since!
Heath Ledger and Michelle Williams, stars of Brokeback Mountain, had a memorable evening at the awards ceremony, where Ledger was nominated for Best Actor and Williams for Best Supporting Actress. Williams especially stood out in a striking yellow Vera Wang gown and a bold red lipstick.
Neutral colors were also popular. While some stars, like Kiera and Michelle, wore bright jewel tones, others – including Uma Thurman, Jennifer Garner, and Jessica Alba – shone in creams and beiges. Uma Thurman, in particular, looked stunning in a white Versace gown featuring a sheer, gathered top and flowing chiffon panels.

One of the most talked-about outfits of the night was the stunning silver beaded Christian Dior gown worn by Reese Witherspoon, a look inspired by 1955 fashion. It was a particularly special night for Witherspoon, as she went on to win the Best Actress award for her performance in Walk the Line.
As Reese accepted her Oscar, she lovingly remembered June Carter Cash, the character she portrayed and admired.
June used to tell people she was simply trying to make a difference, and I understand that feeling completely. I just want to live a meaningful life and create work that resonates with others. Seeing all of you here tonight makes me feel like I’ve actually achieved that.
With the 2026 Oscars just around the corner on March 15th, let’s take a trip down memory lane and revisit the awards show from 20 years ago.

Is looking great at the Oscars difficult? Not for Reese Witherspoon! She stunned in a beautiful, silvery beaded gown from Christian Dior, originally designed in 1955. It was the perfect outfit for her as she accepted the Best Actress award for her performance in Walk the Line.

The Brokeback Mountain actress, nominated for Best Supporting Actress, looked radiant in a bright yellow Vera Wang dress.

The Fantastic Four actress was sweeter than honey in Versace.

The Frida star looked phenomenal from dusk till dawn in her show-stopping blue Versace look.

Derek Zoolander, the actor from the movie Zoolander, was famous for his incredibly striking “blue steel” look.

The actress, nominated for an Academy Award for her role in North Country, looked stunning in an olive green Dior gown with a dramatic bow at the shoulder, ready for a memorable night.

The 13 Going on 30 actress was electric as she sparkled in her butter yellow Michael Kors gown.

We absolutely loved Heath Ledger’s look! While he didn’t win the Best Actor award, he definitely shined in his timeless tuxedo.

It’s the one where the Friends alum hit the red carpet in a black fit and flare number from Rochas.

George Clooney didn’t need any elaborate scheme to shine. He looked sharp in a classic suit as he arrived on the red carpet and later accepted the award for Best Supporting Actor for his performance as Bob Barnes in the movie Syriana.

Keira Knightley, nominated for Best Actress for her role in Pride & Prejudice, looked stunning in a burgundy Vera Wang dress, truly showcasing her star quality.

Before Jennifer Lopez celebrated at the Vanity Fair afterparty, she wore a classic chartreuse gown by Jean Dessès.

It’s one thing to dance like Uma Thurman, but to truly capture her fashion sense is another level. She looked absolutely stunning in her light-colored Versace outfit in Pulp Fiction.

The night was actually quite bright for the actor known for his role in Brokeback Mountain, as he was nominated for Best Actor.
