What to About Blind Side’s Tuohy Family Amid Michael Oher’s Lawsuit

As I delve into the compelling lives of these extraordinary individuals, I find myself awestruck by their resilience and determination. Michael, a football prodigy turned marketing guru, has navigated his journey with grace and tenacity, always striving for growth and success. His life experiences have been nothing short of inspiring, from appearing on national television to publishing best-selling books.

When it comes to this legal battle, Michael Oher and the Tuohys aren’t on the same side.

It might be surprising for fans, given the strong family ties portrayed in the 2009 Oscar-nominated film “The Blind Side”, to learn that Michael Oher, whose journey from homelessness to NFL football was chronicled in the movie, had a strained relationship with his biological family.

On August 14, 2023, Michael submitted a petition claiming that in 2004, he was given documents that he believed were equivalent to adoption papers, but in reality, they appointed the couple as his conservators. In court documents acquired by NBC News, the former athlete stated that he was misled by the Tuohys, who told him that since he was over 18 at the time, the legal procedure to adopt Michael would be called a ‘conservatorship’, but in essence, it functioned as an adoption.

According to the petition, Michael had agreed to the conservatorship under the impression it would make him part of the Tuohy family. However, he later discovered in February 2023 that his signing did not establish any familial bond with the Tuohys. The court documents further state that since at least August 2004, the conservators have misled Michael and the public, claiming they had adopted him. This false claim was used to secure financial benefits for themselves and the foundations under their control.

As stated by Michael, these financial benefits encompass earnings from the 2009 film “The Blind Side”. The petition claims that Leigh Anne and Sean Tuohy received a contract worth $225,000 plus 2.5% of all future ‘Defined Net Proceeds’, not only for themselves but also for their children, Collins and Sean Jr., often referred to as “SJ”.

In response to accusations, Sean shared with the Daily Memphian that it’s disheartening for people to assume he would seek financial gain from any of his children. He further explained that legal advisors had informed him earlier on that they couldn’t adopt children over the age of 18; instead, their only option was to establish a conservatorship when Michael was younger.

The legal representative of the Tuohy family, Martin Singer, also firmly dismissed Michael’s statements as both outrageous and senseless, further characterizing them as painful and nonsensical.

As a lifestyle advisor, I’d rephrase that statement as follows: “It’s absolutely ludicrous to suggest that the Tuohy family ever sought personal gain from Mr. Oher. On the contrary, they welcomed him into their home, providing him with stability, care, and above all, genuine affection. They’ve always treated him like a cherished member of their family, one of their own children.

In their statement dated September 2023, Sean and Leigh Anne stated they cared for Michael deeply, offering him a home, meals, clothes, transportation, but made clear they had not intended to legally adopt him, as per court records obtained by NBC News. Despite occasionally referring to him as their son, they clarified this was not in a legal context.

The NCAA stated that Michael could only join Ole Miss by being connected to the Tuohy family in some way. They chose a conservatorship as the method to achieve this objective, according to their reply. In their response, Sean and Leigh Anne additionally mentioned they were prepared to end the conservatorship at any time, and furthermore, Michael had never asked for it to be terminated before.

As a devoted follower, I’d like to share how Sean and Leigh Anne, in reference to their earnings from “The Blind Side,” stated they received an amount less than $225,000. They further clarified that all funds derived from the film were evenly distributed among themselves, their two children, and Michael. Additionally, they asserted that they’ve always acted with Michael’s best interests at heart. During this period, Michael’s legal representative communicated to NBC News, “We eagerly anticipate Michael getting his day in court, where we are certain the truth will triumph.

2023-09-29, a judge’s decree brought a halt to the conservatorship overseeing Michael’s affairs. However, the broader case persisted. As a die-hard fan, I can hardly contain my excitement about this development, yet I remain eager for more updates on the ongoing proceedings related to the iconic artist.

In November of that particular year, Sean and Leigh Anne submitted financial records revealing that Michael had earned over $138,000 from the 2006 book titled “The Blind Side: Evolution of a Game” and its subsequent movie, as shown in court documents obtained by NBC News. The same month, Michael requested a temporary restraining order to prevent Sean and Leigh Anne, according to documents obtained by the outlet, from exploiting his name, image, and likeness, often in conjunction with the persistent claims that they adopted him.

Later, as stated in court records acquired by ESPN, Michael alleged that Sean and Leigh Anne had made false statements regarding their accounting – specifically, failing to record $2.5 million which he claims was taken from him in 2011 while he was playing football in the NFL. At that time, the Tuohys did not respond to ESPN’s request for comment.

In December, it was claimed by Sean and Leigh Anne that Michael had threatened them via intimidating texts and requested money from them, despite their strained relationship, according to a response obtained by The New York Times.

Michael made it clear that he didn’t file the lawsuit for financial reasons; instead, he had saved his earnings to enjoy life after retiring from playing. In an interview with The New York Times, he emphasized this point by stating, “I’ve worked hard for the moments when I was done playing, and saved my money so I could savor my time. I have millions of dollars; I don’t need more.” The Tuohys declined the interview request from The New York Times.

For a deeper understanding of the actual individuals behind the scenes of “The Blind Side,” who are currently embroiled in a court case, continue to read on.

Who is Michael Oher from The Blind Side?

As a devoted follower, I had the honor to play college football at the University of Mississippi, then, in 2009, I was drafted by the Baltimore Ravens. With them, I achieved the pinnacle of my profession, winning the Super Bowl in 2013. Additionally, throughout my eight-season NFL career, I represented both the Tennessee Titans and Carolina Panthers.

In the year 2022, Michael, who is now 38 years old, tied the knot with his long-term partner Tiffany Roy. With this union, Michael became a stepfather to Kobi and Kierstin, her children from a past relationship. The newlyweds went on to have kids named MJ and Naivi as well.

In his 2023 memoir, “When Your Back’s Against the Wall: Fame, Football and Lessons Learned through a Lifetime of Adversity“, Michael expressed that among all his achievements in life, becoming a father was the one he felt most proud of. This sentiment carries significant weight for men who lacked such role models in their lives.

64-year-old Leigh Anne Tuohy serves as a motivational speaker, writer, and interior designer. She’s also made appearances on programs such as Extreme Makeover: Home Edition.

As a Memphis native, I found my roots in the heartland of the South. My life took an exciting turn when I crossed paths with my future husband, Sean, during our time at the University of Mississippi. We exchanged vows in 1982, marking the beginning of our beautiful journey together. (Website under construction for more details.)

Following the triumph of “The Blind Side,” Leigh Anne Tuohy went on to write two books. The first one, co-authored with Sean, is titled “In a Heartbeat: Embracing the Power of Generosity“. They had a shared connection through their exceptional athletic endeavors: Collins clinched the Tennessee State Championship in Pole Vault, while Michael garnered All-State recognition for his performances in discus and basketball championships.

Just as her parents did, Collins enrolled at the University of Mississippi, where she eventually earned a bachelor’s degree in broadcast journalism. While there, she also cheered on campus and, according to the website, rooted for Michael during his football matches from the sidelines.

Currently, Collins is wedded to Cannon Smith and jointly runs Whimsy Cookie Company in Memphis. Furthermore, she has been appointed to the Board of her family’s Making It Happen Foundation, where she collaborates with her parents and brother SJ.
