In the opening scenes of Prime Video’s “Countdown”, it was disclosed that Jensen Ackles‘ character is facing a terminal illness, setting a somber tone for the series.
At the initial broadcast on Wednesday, June 25th, Mark Meacham (Ackles) appeared to be dealing with recurring headaches. Later, it was disclosed that a doctor had diagnosed him with a brain tumor nearly nine months earlier.
The doctor pointed out that, given the advanced nature of your glioblastoma multiforme, the potential hazards associated with surgery or radiotherapy seem to exceed the advantages. Instead, I’ll increase the dose of your medication and we’ll stick with routine MRI scans.
The physician made it clear that there was no cure for Meachum’s health problem. He suggested, “Perhaps you could find a beautiful beach, relax, and take all the pain medication you need to help you enjoy the remaining time of your life as comfortably as possible.
Meachum expressed his desire for some downtime, but found himself engaged in grueling tasks throughout the first three episodes of the season. This included pushing his body to its limits while dealing with a dangerous drug cartel, a significant threat to the U.S., and any other physically demanding chores that came along with working on a covert task force.
A detective from the LAPD gets enlisted into a secret squad composed of officers from diverse law enforcement agencies, following the shocking assassination of an officer from the Department of Homeland Security. Their mission: locate and apprehend the killer. However, they soon discover that there’s more than just a single murder at play – a larger conspiracy is unfolding. As they race against time, they must not only identify the culprit but also safeguard Los Angeles from the impending danger.

In a busy schedule, Ackles’ work on Prime Video’s series is just one of many projects he’s involved in. This comes after gaining widespread recognition as Dean Winchester from The CW’s Supernatural, and at 47 years old, Ackles has since appeared on The Boys and will now lead his own prequel series titled Vought Rising.
Apart from his recurring role as Justin Hartley’s onscreen sibling in “Tracker”, Ackles previously made a guest appearance on “Big Sky” and took up the role of producer for “The Winchesters”.
Or alternatively,
Before joining “Tracker” as Justin Hartley’s on-screen brother, Ackles had a brief stint as a guest star on “Big Sky” and produced “The Winchesters”.
In his 2024 statement, Ackles expressed enthusiasm about continuing his collaboration with the Prime Video team on ‘Countdown’, following their work together on ‘The Boys’. He’s eager to join forces with Derek [Haas] and the rest of the ‘Countdown’ crew to breathe life into this story.
In addition to Countdown, the star-studded cast includes Eric Dane, Jessica Camacho, Violett Beane, Uli Latukefu, and Elliot Knight. Notably, this project is one of Dane’s latest endeavors following his ALS diagnosis.
In a statement made in April, Dane, who is 52 years old, announced that he has been diagnosed with ALS. He expressed his gratitude for having his family by his side during this challenging time as they embark on the next phase together. Despite his diagnosis, he feels blessed to be able to continue working and is eager to get back to work on Euphoria starting from the following week.
The statement continued: “I kindly ask that you give my family and I privacy during this time.”
New episodes of Countdown air Wednesdays on Prime Video.
