Netflix’s The Adam Project is a surprisingly delightful movie that quickly becomes a fan favorite. It stars Ryan Reynolds and a young actor playing his younger self, and it’s a fun reunion for Mark Ruffalo and Jennifer Garner, who previously worked together on 13 Going On 30. Directed by Shawn Levy, known for Stranger Things, this sci-fi adventure is full of both heart and humor. There’s even a memorable and funny scene where Ryan Reynolds and Mark Ruffalo playfully punch each other – Ruffalo’s punch is definitely the best, and he didn’t mind at all giving his friend a playful hit!
Have you ever wondered what it feels like to hit Ryan Reynolds in a movie? It seems that actor Mark Ruffalo had been thinking about this for a while. As it turns out, Ruffalo was eager to land a punch on Reynolds in the 2022 film The Adam Project. He recently told GQ that he nailed the shot on the very first try, and shared the amusing reason why.
We ran through a practice take, and I suddenly envisioned exactly how the scene should play out – it came to me in a dream, actually. So, I just did what I’d seen in my dream, and everyone started laughing. Director Shawn Levy thought it was good, and suggested we try it one more time, but he felt like we’d already captured what we needed. It was one of those perfect, unplanned moments that just clicked.
Just picture Ryan Reynolds finding out his co-star, Mark Ruffalo, actually dreamt about punching him! I’m really hoping Reynolds responds to these funny comments – I’m dying to know what he thinks.
Mark Ruffalo isn’t surprised he’s had to plan punches with Ryan Reynolds for their scenes together – it happens often! It’s likely due to the sarcastic and witty personality Reynolds brings to his roles. Considering the three Deadpool movies alone, there’s bound to be at least one punch per film given how much trouble Deadpool causes. It even happened on the set of The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard, where Frank Grillo actually punched Reynolds for real while trying to silence his character. Grillo, who also starred in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, confessed the accidental hit happened during filming.

Though Ryan Reynolds and young actor Walker Scobell share many funny scenes in The Adam Project, Mark Ruffalo doesn’t punch Reynolds because of any sarcasm. Instead, it’s payback! Reynolds throws the first punch after Ruffalo, playing his father, scolds him about the risks of time travel – a pretty obvious concern, really.
Ryan Reynolds portrays a rebellious time agent who is impressively muscular, as described by his younger co-star. Mark Ruffalo, in contrast, plays a smart professor and father – not someone you’d picture delivering a powerful blow. Ruffalo’s idea for the punch – a leaping forward lunge directly to the jaw with a kick – turned out to be exactly what the scene needed.

Even with all the action and fighting, the heartwarming relationship between the father and two sons – especially how they connect with their resurrected dad – is truly touching, particularly at the movie’s end. It feels like a complete story that doesn’t need a sequel, but I’d love to see this cast work together again. It might be difficult though, as young Walker Scobell is committed to Disney’s Percy Jackson for the foreseeable future, and Shawn Levy is busy finishing Stranger Things with the Duffer Brothers. Still, considering how often Levy and Reynolds have collaborated, I’m hopeful they’ll find another project to do together.
Luckily, their most successful collaboration (in my opinion), The Adam Project, is a great movie to watch with the family in the fall, and you can stream it anytime with a Netflix subscription.
