What’s Next For Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End After Major Publisher Controversy

This month, Shogakukan, a major publishing company, faced significant backlash after it was revealed they had hired two authors with convictions for sexually assaulting minors. Yamamoto Shoichi, the creator of Operation Fallen Angel, and Tatsuya Matsuki, who created Act-Age for Shonen Jump, were both contracted to work on Manga One using pseudonyms. The news quickly spread online, sparking widespread condemnation from manga fans globally. This included criticism from prominent manga artists like ONE, the author of One-Punch Man, who publicly voiced their disapproval of Shogakukan’s decision.

Shogakukan, a major publishing company, has fully admitted fault after a recent issue and promises it won’t happen again. An investigation is underway, and many manga artists are voicing their concerns to ensure the problem is taken seriously. Artists behind popular series like One-Punch Man and Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End have temporarily removed their work from the Manga One app. However, this doesn’t mean the series are cancelled – they will continue to be published in Shogakukan’s various magazines.

Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End Continues Its Hiatus

The manga Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End has been running in Shonen Sunday magazine since 2020 and will start publishing new chapters again after a break. Although recent issues have brought the series attention, there’s still no news about when it will return. The break began last October because the creators, writer Kanehito Yamada and illustrator Tsukasa Abe, were unwell.

This is the second time the series has paused this year. It briefly returned in July 2025 after a pause was announced in January, but it’s on hold again. The creators are using this time to rest and work on the story at a comfortable pace. The break is meant to help them maintain a healthy schedule, and the series is expected to resume in a few months.

The manga is at a pivotal moment, with Frieren and her companions arriving at the capital’s Foundation Festival to help Serie, who is facing a threat. Meanwhile, the anime’s second season is underway, now showing the Divine Revolte Arc. You can read all the manga chapters and purchase both physical and digital copies on Viz Media’s official website.
