What’s Next For This Iconic 49-Year-Old Spider-Man Character Now Her Sony Movie’s Been Cancelled?

I’m hearing some really frustrating news about a Spider-Man adjacent character, a woman who’s about 49 years old, and a project featuring her has apparently been scrapped. What’s so disappointing is that she’s really come into her own, becoming a compelling character outside of the Spider-Man universe – her best stories don’t even need Spider-Man! There’s a glimmer of hope, though. Rumors are swirling that Sony might be open to sharing some of their characters with Marvel Studios, and that could be a lifeline for this character. It would be fantastic to see her get the spotlight she deserves, maybe even in a project completely separate from Spider-Man. But honestly, right now, her future is totally uncertain.

After the disappointing performance of films like Morbius, Madame Web, and Kraven the Hunter, Sony has decided to halt production on all of its Spider-Man-related projects. This includes a Spider-Woman movie, which many believed had the potential to be a standout Marvel film, and was reportedly going to be directed by Olivia Wilde. With the project now canceled, the future of the character Jessica Drew remains uncertain.

Spider-Woman Could Still Pop Up in the MCU

Currently, it’s unclear what Sony’s plans are for Spider-Woman. Unless they decide to feature her in a spin-off series similar to the upcoming Spider-Man Noir show on Prime Video, a movie appearance seems unlikely, especially given Sony’s recent setbacks. However, the recent agreement between Sony and Marvel Studios to share some Spider-Man characters offers a glimmer of hope.

As a huge Spider-Man fan, I’m getting really excited about the possibilities! It seems like we could finally see characters like Venom and others show up in the MCU Spider-Man films, since Marvel already has the rights. With Kraven getting his own Sony movie, it feels like the door is open for even more villains. But honestly, what I’m really hoping for is Spider-Woman! It’s even possible she could have been part of the MCU all along, and this opens up a way for that to happen!

Marvel sometimes allowed other studios to use its characters, with certain restrictions. For instance, while Marvel couldn’t create a solo Hulk movie without sharing profits with Universal, they could include Hulk in team-up films like The Avengers and Thor: Ragnarok. A similar situation existed with Quicksilver; both Marvel and Fox featured the character, but Marvel avoided making him a mutant in Avengers: Age of Ultron.

Marvel could potentially introduce Spider-Woman, but it would likely require a significant change to her backstory. Traditionally known as Spider-Woman, she’d probably need a new identity and distance from the spider-themed elements already established in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, recent talks between Sony and Marvel suggest this might now be a possibility.

Where Should Spider-Woman Show Up in the MCU?

As a big movie fan, I think the coolest thing about Spider-Woman isn’t even her connection to Spider-Man. She’s great in those Spider-Verse stories, sure, but she really shines when she’s just being herself within the wider Marvel universe. Honestly, I’d love to see her pop up on Disney+ – not as Spider-Woman, but as Jessica Drew, alongside Jessica Jones in her own series. That would be amazing!

Jessica Drew and Jessica Jones are both private investigators, but Drew has a background as a secret agent for the U.S. government. They’ve become close friends, especially after both had children and formed a strong connection. While Drew is also good friends with Carol Danvers (Captain Marvel), because Captain Marvel is often away from Earth, it makes more sense for Drew to team up with Jessica Jones.

What’s great is that Jessica Drew can fight and use her unique powers without needing to be tied to the Spider-Man story or even be called Spider-Woman. Both she and Spider-Man have experienced significant hardship and offer each other strong support. This feels like the perfect place for her in the Marvel Cinematic Universe – operating as Jessica Drew and primarily appearing on Disney+ alongside other heroes who focus on street-level threats.

Her best alternative path might have already passed. Jessica Drew played a significant role in the Secret Invasion story, and her history with Nick Fury and SHIELD was central to her character. However, the events of Secret Invasion are best left behind in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and SHIELD isn’t as important anymore, now that Damage Control handles superhuman threats. One idea is to have Jessica Drew work for Damage Control, then rebel against them if they become corrupt. The main aim is to introduce Spider-Woman as a compelling hero, but keep her separate from Spider-Man.
