WhatsApp is encouraging people who use its PC app to switch to the new web version. If you currently have the WhatsApp for Windows app, you’ll now see a notification letting you know updates are on the way.
The recent announcement doesn’t mention that WhatsApp is reverting to a web app format that’s essentially contained within a wrapper. They began testing this new approach in July. While this simplifies development for WhatsApp, it may use more of your computer’s resources.
The update begins on December 9th, but it’s being released to users in stages, not all at once.
I’ve been playing around with the latest WhatsApp, and honestly, the RAM usage is a bit crazy! Windows Latest did some testing recently, and they found that the web version of WhatsApp uses up to seven times *more* RAM than the regular app. It’s a significant difference and something I’ve definitely noticed when running it alongside other programs.
I haven’t noticed RAM usage that high before, but it naturally changes based on how many chats are open and active.
The new WhatsApp is powered by WebView2, which is a factor in why it uses more RAM.

WhatsApp itself acknowledges that its mobile app performs better than its web version. They previously stated this in a support document, highlighting the difference.
We’ve created official WhatsApp apps for Windows and Mac computers to make your desktop experience better. These apps are faster and more dependable, and they offer new ways to work together and boost your productivity.
The document has been revised and no longer compares native and web apps. Now, it just highlights the overall advantages of using WhatsApp on Windows, like sharing photos, messaging, and participating in Communities.
The biggest downside of the new WhatsApp is that it’s built like a website inside an app, so it uses more computer memory (RAM) than a traditional app. Using RAM isn’t a bad thing – it’s good to use all your computer’s resources – but you might notice performance issues if your computer is already running close to its maximum capacity.
If your phone feels slow because of many apps running, or you want to use a powerful app alongside WhatsApp, it’s helpful if WhatsApp doesn’t use too much of your phone’s processing power.
With how expensive RAM is currently, spending money on more memory isn’t a good way to fix the fact that WhatsApp is now just a web app.
The new WhatsApp update includes some enhancements, like a better experience within Communities. We’ll need to see how more users interact with the update before we can fully understand what people think of it.
