When could The War Between the Land and the Sea be released on Disney+? Latest news and speculation

Ever since “The War Between the Land and the Sea” premiered in the UK last December, viewers around the world have been eager for it to become available on Disney+.

Because the new Doctor Who spin-off was made while the BBC and Disney still had a broadcasting agreement, it will eventually be available to stream on Disney+, similar to how Ncuti Gatwa’s seasons of Doctor Who are shown there.

Featuring Russell Tovey and Gugu Mbatha-Raw as Barclay and Salt, The War Between the Land and the Sea told the story of a large-scale conflict between humans and the Sea Devils (now called Homo Aqua) – classic villains from Doctor Who – sparked by damage to Earth’s oceans and rivers.

Here’s everything we know so far about when the spin-off could be released on Disney+.

When could The War Between the Land and the Sea be released on Disney+?

Disney+ has not yet confirmed a release date, but we know it will be released in 2026.

The soonest we can expect its release is now May 2026. The streamer has already scheduled content through the end of April, so it won’t be available any earlier.

Writer Pete McTighe hinted at the release date during an appearance at the Gallifrey One convention. According to CultBox, he said he’d heard it was coming soon, though he admitted he didn’t have specific details, only that people had told him to expect it ‘soon’.

He also encouraged fans around the world to purchase the Blu-ray version of the series, which came out in February.

He mentioned the Blu-ray includes a lot of bonus content, like deleted scenes and a fascinating documentary about how the film was made. He was particularly impressed with the amount of footage they shot and expressed hope that a longer version of the film will be released someday.

The behind-the-scenes documentary has since been released on YouTube.

What is The War Between the Land and the Sea about?

According to the BBC, a terrifying, ancient species rises from the ocean, announcing its presence to the world and causing a global crisis. With everyone in danger, UNIT, a military organization, takes charge as conflict erupts on both land and sea.

Tovey portrays Barclay, a regular person unexpectedly caught up in a larger struggle, while Mbatha-Raw plays Salt, an ambassador representing the Homo Aqua people. The two characters find themselves forming an unlikely bond.

The show heavily features the issue of climate change. Showrunner Russell T Davies has said that telling writers not to be ‘preachy’ is one of the most unhelpful things you can say.

For centuries, many religions have relied on spreading their message through sermons and teachings, and that approach has proven effective. I don’t need to be overly dramatic or present myself as superior. If I’m describing the state of the oceans in 2025, I can simply state the facts: they’re likely polluted, smelly, and severely damaged.

I have to address these points. It’s only involved in politics because it’s been forced to be.
