The new animated series, Maul: Shadow Lord, promises to be a thrilling and dark addition to the Star Wars universe, finally focusing the story on Darth Maul. It will also explore a significant, previously untold part of his life.
We already knew the show would happen after the Clone Wars, during the Empire’s oppressive rule—a period known as the “Dark Times.” But with the release of the first trailer for Maul: Shadow Lord, we now have a much clearer idea of where the show fits within the overall Star Wars timeline.
The First Trailer For Maul: Shadow Lord Has Been Released
The official debut trailer for Maul: Shadow Lord is packed with exciting reveals and brutal action.
We’re starting to see the emergence of Crimson Dawn, a criminal organization led by Maul, alongside the Empire strengthening its control and Inquisitors actively pursuing Maul. The story also hints that Maul might train a new Twi’lek apprentice, Devon Izara, drawing inspiration from ideas George Lucas originally had for a character named Darth Talon that weren’t used in the seventh Star Wars film.
Most significantly, the trailer confirms the show fits into the established Star Wars timeline. The Empire is still strengthening its control, and Maul continues to secretly expand his influence within the criminal world.
The show’s setting is much earlier in the Star Wars timeline, closer to the Clone Wars era, as evidenced by the use of older armor and early versions of the AT-ST walker. It’s definitely before the events of Solo: A Star Wars Story and Rebels, which also featured significant appearances by Maul during this period. The presence of the Sixth Brother suggests that this new story takes place before the Inquisitor’s death, as seen in the third episode of Tales of the Jedi.
Maul: Shadow Lord Will Be Set One Year After The Clone Wars
Also, Lucasfilm has officially stated that the story in Maul: Shadow Lord takes place only a year after the events of The Clone Wars.
Following the end of the Clone Wars, Maul managed to escape Ahsoka Tano just as Order 66 was carried out. He disappeared into hiding as the Republic transformed into the Empire, now under the control of his former master, Darth Sidious. The upcoming story, Shadow Lord, appears to focus on Maul’s struggles with this new galactic order and his attempts to establish his own power base.
The film Solo depicted Maul at his most powerful, during a chaotic period in galactic history. Rebels showed him after he’d abandoned his criminal organization, consumed by his quest for revenge against his former master and, especially, Obi-Wan Kenobi. Now, Shadow Lord will reveal how Maul originally gained power during that turbulent time, and how he adjusted to the changing galaxy.
Maul: Shadow Lord begins streaming April 6th on Disney+.
