When The Mandalorian & Grogu Takes Place in the Star Wars Timeline

As a huge Star Wars fan, it’s amazing to see how much this universe has expanded since that first movie in 1977! What started as a fun, *Flash Gordoninspired film has become this massive, incredibly detailed story told through movies, shows, books, and games. Because of that, I always get really excited to find out where each new Star Wars project fits into the overall timeline. Especially with Disney and Lucasfilm exploring different eras, it’s fascinating to see how everything connects and builds on what we already know.

It’s been almost seven years since the last Star Wars movie, but a new film is coming to theaters this summer! The Mandalorian and Grogu will continue the story from the popular Disney+ series. The movie takes place in the same time period as the Mandalorian TV shows, but fans are wondering exactly where it fits within the larger Star Wars timeline.

When The Mandalorian Takes Place In the Star Wars Timeline

Determining the timeline of The Mandalorian and Grogu requires understanding when the The Mandalorian show itself is set. The series begins nine years after the Battle of Yavin, a key event in Star Wars: A New Hope. This places it five years after Return of the Jedi. By this point, the Empire has fallen, and the New Republic is established and working to keep the peace. However, Imperial forces still exist, eventually forming the basis of the First Order seen in the later films.

It’s surprising to learn that all three seasons of The Mandalorian seem to have unfolded within a single year. According to sources like Star Wars: Timelines and articles in Star Wars Insider, Moff Gideon’s defeat in the Season 3 finale also occurs in 9 ABY. This might seem odd considering Din Djarin and Grogu’s journey spans four seasons of television, including The Book of Boba Fett. You’d naturally expect a time skip, especially with Grogu’s training with Luke Skywalker. However, unless Lucasfilm states otherwise, everything in The Mandalorian currently takes place within 9 ABY.

The year 9 ABY is significant because it’s when many of the stories in the MandoVerse take place, including the first season of Star Wars: Ahsoka. We don’t yet know exactly when Season 2 of Ahsoka will be set, but considering the way Season 1 ended, it will probably begin shortly after the events of the finale.

When Does The Mandalorian and Grogu Take Place in the Star Wars Timeline?

Lucasfilm hasn’t officially said when The Mandalorian and Grogu will take place in the Star Wars timeline. We know the film happens after Season 3 of The Mandalorian, with Din Djarin and Grogu now helping the New Republic take down remnants of the Empire. However, it’s unclear if the movie is set in 9 ABY or sometime later during the New Republic period.

So far, the promotional materials for The Mandalorian and Grogu haven’t revealed much about what’s coming next. As expected, the trailers focus on showcasing a thrilling cinematic experience with the beloved pair, emphasizing Grogu’s cuteness and the grand scale of Star Wars. However, a key detail within the movie – Grogu himself – might hold the answer. When you consider the footage released alongside recent statements from Kathleen Kennedy, the mystery could be solved.

The trailers for The Mandalorian & Grogu show Grogu acting much like he does in the series – skillfully using the Force to solve problems, like dealing with a droid in a snowy setting, but still behaving like the playful and mischievous toddler fans adore. Some of the trailer’s funniest moments feature Grogu pressing buttons on the Razor Crest, much to Din Djarin’s annoyance, and enjoying his beloved cookies. Though it’s been seven years since audiences first met Grogu, he still appears to be a very young child who hasn’t physically grown much, which suggests the new story takes place around the same time as previous events – 9 ABY.

The idea that The Mandalorian and Grogu is set around 9 After the Battle of Yavin (ABY) seems increasingly likely, especially after Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy confirmed Grogu won’t speak in the film. Many fans thought this movie would be the perfect time for Grogu to say his first words, but Kennedy’s statement suggests that won’t happen. This shows Lucasfilm isn’t eager to age the character. Grogu is a huge marketing success, and the studio needs to be very cautious about making any significant changes to him – even giving him a voice. Therefore, they’ll probably continue to set stories around 9 ABY for as long as possible. While the film might take place in 10 ABY, it likely won’t jump much further ahead than that.
