Although her tale is purely fictional, the Magdalene Laundries were indeed genuine institutions that many believe negatively impacted the lives of approximately 30,000 women.

While these institutions have roots that stretch deeper into history, it’s primarily the practices during the 20th century that are better understood due to their involvement with the criminal justice system, reformatory schools, and the Health and Social Services sector, from which inmates were admitted.

Upon entering, individuals were expected to perform uncompensated work, a fact that has been corroborated by numerous ex-prisoners who have spoken about instances of abuse.

1990s saw a media uproar surrounding the Magdalene Laundries, as an excavation unearthed a burial site containing 155 bodies on the previous site of one such establishment in Drumcondra, Dublin.
