Where Is The Marketing For The Mandalorian & Grogu?

Although The Mandalorian & Grogu is a new Star Wars film, it hasn’t generated much buzz, and its release isn’t feeling like a major event. With so many Star Wars projects coming out at once, it’s harder for any single one to really capture fans’ excitement.

This is a common challenge for any successful movie or TV franchise. Whether it’s Jurassic World or the Marvel Cinematic Universe, a key to long-term success is finding the right balance – not releasing so much content that audiences get overwhelmed trying to follow everything.

Even the most popular sci-fi series ever, Star Wars, faces its own set of challenges. While some recent movies and shows haven’t lived up to expectations, Star Wars still holds a special place with audiences across generations. Because of this long-standing legacy, each new release is expected to be a huge event.

The Mandalorian & Grogu Has Had Minimal Marketing So Far

It’s still hard to believe, even in late January 2026, that a brand new Star Wars movie is coming out in just a few months! Instead of a fourth season of The Mandalorian, Jon Favreau is directing The Mandalorian & Grogu, which will continue Din Djarin and Grogu’s adventures as they now work with the New Republic. I’m so excited to finally see their story on the big screen!

Following the events of the Galactic Empire’s defeat, The Mandalorian & Grogu continues the adventures of the bounty hunter Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) and his companion Grogu. This new story also introduces Sigourney Weaver as Colonel Ward, a leader within the New Republic’s Adelphi Rangers, and Jeremy Allen White as Rotta, Jabba the Hutt’s son.

Sigourney Weaver joining the series is a major event, considering her iconic roles in films like Alien and Avatar – she’s a true sci-fi legend. Despite the anticipated success of Pedro Pascal’s 2026 film, the release of The Mandalorian & Grogu feels like a secondary consideration for the franchise overall.

The Mandalorian & Grogu Trailer Was Underwhelming

There’s a chance we’ll see a new trailer for The Mandalorian & Grogu during the Super Bowl, but so far, promotion for the movie has been surprisingly quiet, especially with its release date approaching. The first trailer wasn’t very impressive either, feeling much like another episode of The Mandalorian in terms of scope and style.

Previous seasons of the show successfully captured the grand scale and immersive feeling of a big-screen Star Wars movie. This was particularly impressive, and Jon Favreau’s work as the creator and main writer helped make the show feel as visually stunning and epic as the more recent Star Wars films.

Following the mixed reception of The Rise of Skywalker, many fans felt the first seasons of The Mandalorian were a stronger addition to the Star Wars universe than the latest films. Jon Favreau clearly knows how to make a hit movie, with previous successes like Iron Man and the 2019 remake of The Lion King under his belt.

Star Wars’ First Movie Since Episode IX Doesn’t Feel Like An Event

His involvement as a writer on The Book of Boba Fett and as an executive producer on Ahsoka and Star Wars: Skeleton Crew shows how committed he is to the Star Wars universe. However, the release of The Mandalorian & Grogu doesn’t quite feel like the big moment you’d expect.

The success of 2016’s Rogue One demonstrated the potential of Star Wars spinoffs, but 2018’s Solo didn’t fare as well, proving these films aren’t always box office hits. Despite featuring a strong cast – including Emilia Clarke, Donald Glover, and Woody Harrelson – Solo only made $393 million worldwide, despite costing over $300 million to produce.

The main problem with the Solo prequel was a lack of excitement leading up to its 2018 release. It came out at a difficult time, squeezed between Star Wars: The Last Jedi and Rise of the Skywalker, and Avengers: Infinity War significantly hurt its chances at the box office.

Despite not having a major box office rival, The Mandalorian & Grogu doesn’t quite feel like a must-see movie. As a continuation of a streaming show made for the big screen, it’s going to be difficult to get audiences to go to the theater, especially since the trailers and promotion haven’t generated much excitement.

Was The Mandalorian & Grogu The Right Choice For A Star Wars Movie?

The issues with a potential Mandalorian & Grogu movie might go beyond just the promotional efforts. The Mandalorian has been around for seven years now, and it’s possible a standalone movie is coming too late. Interest in Grogu also seems to have waned since its initial peak.

Almost no one dislikes Baby Yoda, but the character was most popular between 2020 and 2022. With several years having passed, it might be challenging for The Mandalorian & Grogu to keep Din Djarin’s story feeling important to Star Wars fans by 2026.
