Mikayla Matthews and Jace Terry are navigating a new normal. 

Following the season four reveal on Secret Lives of Mormon Wives that she and Jace were separating due to problems with intimacy, she recently shared how things are going between them now.

Mikayla recently shared with People magazine that last season she began to address the trauma from sexual abuse she experienced as a teenager. She explained it was the first time she had fully revisited those painful memories.

She said they’re both still adjusting to the separation and are trying to handle it as best they can. She added that it will likely take a long time to fully process, and she doesn’t want to say much more about it right now.

Mikayla and Jace, who share four children – Beckham, 8, Haven, 6, Tommie, 4, and Lottie, 8 months – explained their decision to separate on the ninth episode of the show’s fourth season. She shared the details in a private interview.

Jace and I spent all night discussing whether or not to separate,” the 25-year-old shared. “With everything happening online with ‘MomTok’ and the stress I feel to fix our marriage, I’m really at my limit. We’ve both decided that taking some time apart is the best thing to do.

While packing, she reassured Jace that she didn’t see this as a permanent separation. She expected they’d continue to see each other daily, and she definitely didn’t want to be apart from their children for even a single day.

Jace, who is 30, continues to believe Mikayla would benefit from therapy to process her past trauma. He explained that he needs to see her committed to the relationship before they can reconcile, saying, “I don’t think getting back together will help until you’re ready to fully commit.”

Mikayla shared that despite going to therapy for a while, she’s still struggling with personal issues. She also explained that the difficulties in her marriage were making her long-term health problems worse, as stress tends to trigger flare-ups.

She told Jace that talking about sex or intimacy was difficult for her. She explained that she’s often already overwhelmed and on edge, feeling like she has no emotional capacity left to deal with those topics.

Later, Mikayla also reflected on his hopes for her to attend trauma therapy.

She admitted it’s hard to say how long it will take to work through things, possibly weeks or even months. She’s afraid of losing him because, despite a strong marriage in most ways, they’re struggling with intimacy – a particularly painful issue considering it’s his biggest need and her deepest vulnerability.

Meanwhile, Jace also detailed how their intimacy challenges affect him beyond the physical.

He shared with Connor Leavitt, Whitney Leavitt’s husband, that what he missed most wasn’t physical intimacy, but a genuine connection with his wife and feeling loved by her. He spoke with emotion about wanting to rebuild that emotional bond.
