Be warned, this article contains spoilers for episodes 2 and 3 of Daredevil: Born Again. While The Punisher remains a part of the show’s storyline in season 2, he won’t actually appear on screen. The recent episodes explain where Frank Castle is and why he hasn’t been seen.
The first episode of Daredevil: Born Again season 2 shows that Mayor Fisk’s task force, which is meant to fight vigilantes, is still using The Punisher’s logo – now with more official recognition. Episodes 2 and 3 have also revealed more about Frank Castle’s (The Punisher’s) activities from the first season, prompting characters to finally discuss his whereabouts and what he’s been doing.
Daredevil And Karen’s New Hideout Belonged To Frank Castle’s Punisher
Following the violent attack on Josie’s Bar by the AVTF in the second episode of Daredevil: Born Again, Matt Murdock and Karen Page have to go into hiding because it’s now too risky for them to be out in public.
Mayor Fisk is playing a clever game. He’s publicly framing Daredevil as a criminal while simultaneously portraying the missing Matt Murdock as a hero who saved his life. This strategy turns public opinion against Daredevil without revealing his true identity, and ironically, it actually helps Matt Murdock stay hidden.
Following this, Karen and Matt are seen moving into a safe house previously featured in the first season of Daredevil: Born Again. This is the same place where Frank and Matt had a memorable and intense argument about Bullseye and Foggy’s death – a standout scene from that season.
The safe house reappears in season 2 of Daredevil: Born Again, but Frank Castle (The Punisher) is absent. It seems he hasn’t been back since he escaped the AVTF at the end of season 1, a detail suggested by a conversation between Karen and Matt about his possible whereabouts.
How Daredevil: Born Again Addresses The Punisher’s Absence In Season 2
Both Karen Page and Matt Murdock are looking for Frank Castle, as The Punisher hasn’t been in touch with either of them since the end of the first season of Daredevil: Born Again.
In season 2, episode 3 of Daredevil: Born Again, Karen wonders if Matt believes Frank Castle is dead. However, they both realize that if Castle were dead, Wilson Fisk would be sure to make a public announcement and revel in it.
Frank Castle is probably just back to his old ways – working alone to fight crime in New York, instead of actively helping Daredevil challenge Mayor Fisk. Although Karen points out Frank has assisted them in the past, Matt believes that resorting to murder isn’t the right approach to defeating Fisk.
Frank Castle, also known as the Punisher, has never really been a team player within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. While he’s teamed up with characters like Daredevil before, those alliances have always been short-lived and somewhat strained. This is because Frank’s brutal methods – his willingness to kill his enemies – fundamentally conflict with Daredevil’s more ethical approach, which focuses on bringing criminals to justice through the courts.
Even so, it’ll be interesting to see what Frank Castle has been doing in the new Punisher: One Last Kill special, which will be released on Disney+ shortly after the season finale of Daredevil: Born Again.
Jon Bernthal is officially joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe as the Punisher in Spider-Man: Brand New Day. This will be his first appearance in a Marvel movie, and the story will feature both conflict and an uneasy alliance with Spider-Man, played by Tom Holland.
It’s clear Marvel Studios is planning major appearances for The Punisher in 2026. Hopefully, they’ll also explain what Frank Castle was doing during the second season of Daredevil: Born Again.
New episodes of Daredevil: Born Again season 2 release Tuesdays on Disney+.
