The new series, Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, introduces a fresh group of characters and takes place in a future timeline that’s still being revealed. Star Trek has always imagined a hopeful future where humanity thrives as part of the United Federation of Planets, and with the franchise celebrating its 60th anniversary, Starfleet Academy feels like a tribute to its rich history. The Academy was first alluded to six decades ago, and now we’re finally getting a series dedicated to it.
Starfleet Academy could realistically be placed at almost any point in Star Trek history. It was already a known institution during Captain Kirk’s time, as seen in The Original Series, and The Next Generation further built its reputation through stories about Jean-Luc Picard’s experiences there. However, the new Starfleet Academy series takes place in a relatively unexplored era, continuing the events of Star Trek: Discovery.
Starfleet Academy is as Far Forward in the Timeline as We’ve Ever Gone
Set in the year 3191 – the same time period as the fifth season of Discovery – Star Trek: Starfleet Academy takes place far into the future, even for Star Trek. The USS Discovery traveled to this era through time, finding a Federation weakened by a catastrophic event called the Burn. After the Discovery crew solved the mystery of the Burn and prevented it from recurring, space travel became possible again, and the Federation began to rebuild. Starfleet Academy plays a vital role in this new era.
Even before the new series began, during Season 4 of Discovery, plans were underway to establish Starfleet Academy, and there was discussion about having members of the Discovery crew teach there. This is why we see familiar faces like Sylvia Tilly (Mary Wiseman) and Jett Reno (Tig Notaro) in Starfleet Academy. The Academy is reopening in San Francisco now because Earth only recently rejoined the Federation – less than a year ago.
What Starfleet Academy’s Place in the Timeline Means for the Stars

The new setting for Starfleet Academy is quite interesting: the school must completely change how it operates to prepare graduates for a very dangerous galaxy. With the Federation still recovering and actively seeking new members, the first class of cadets will face immense pressure. These cadets share a unique background – they all grew up after the Burn, a devastating galactic event – and may struggle to embody the Federation’s core principles.
