A detective suspects the headmaster of an elite private school is hiding something when the man’s wife suddenly goes missing from their home.
DS Annie Cassidy is suspicious of Michael Polly. He seems much more focused on his work and coaching the school rugby team than on the fact that his wife, Sarah – who also teaches at the school with their daughter, Alana – has gone missing.
Having experienced abuse in the past, and still facing the possibility of being drawn back into that situation, she notices troubling patterns in Michael’s behavior. This leads her to question whether he might be involved in Sarah’s disappearance.
Morrissey explained in an interview with TopMob that the show ‘Gone’ handles the topic of coercive control in a realistic way. He appreciated how the story doesn’t rely on obvious signs of abuse, because coercive behavior is often much more subtle and gradual. It’s not always easy to recognize, which is why people often wonder how someone could miss the signs – but that’s precisely how it works.
I believe the screenwriter, George Kay, really delves into the idea that this can happen to strong, capable adults, and we see both women trying to cope with and navigate this awful situation.
Unfortunately, this is a situation many people can relate to, either through their own experiences or those of someone they know.
While the school and the Polly house are the show’s primary settings, many other scenes will seem familiar due to the city’s unique atmosphere and appearance.

Gone filming locations

Gone was filmed in and around Bristol.
The school seen in the series is Downer School, a genuine public school located in Stratton-the-Fosse, near Bath.
Morrissey mentioned that some students from the school play rugby, and the Polly house—a beautiful home in his opinion—is nearby, offering views of the entire valley and the Bristol Channel.
“And we did lots of driving over Clifton Bridge as well.”
Some of the on-location filming spots included (via The Bottle Yard Studios):
- A café on Queen Square Avenue.
- A restaurant on Queens Road in Clifton.
- A property on Richmond Hill Avenue in Clifton, which doubled as the exterior for the police station.
- The DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel in Bristol city centre, which doubled as the police station’s press room.
- A building on Berkeley Square, which doubled as a financial office.
- The village of Saltford.
The sets for the police station and the inside of the Polly house were constructed at The Bottle Yard Studios, the largest film and TV studio complex in the West of England.
“So we had the best of both worlds, really,” said Eve Myles. “We had great locations and great sets. It’s Bristol. It has everything to offer a film company.”
