I’ve always noticed how crime dramas really feel tied to where they’re filmed. Think about it – ‘Morse’ just is Oxford, ‘Blue Lights’ feels totally Belfast, and ‘Midsomer Murders’ wouldn’t be the same anywhere but that made-up county of Midsomer! It’s like the location is another character in the show.
A new TV series, Lynley, based on the novels by Elizabeth George, has just been released. Starring Leo Suter, Sofia Barclay, and Daniel Mays, all four episodes are currently available on BBC iPlayer.
The show offers stunning scenery as detectives Lynley and Havers investigate various crimes. But fans often wonder: where does the story take place, and where was it actually filmed?
Read on for everything you need to know about the locations used for filming Lynley.
Where is Lynley set?

In Lynley, the main character joins the Three Counties Major Investigation Team and begins solving crimes in Suffolk, Norfolk, and Cambridgeshire.
The new series primarily takes place in these locations, though some scenes are also filmed in London. This differs from the original novels and the previous TV show, The Inspector Lynley Mysteries, where Lynley was a London Metropolitan Police detective who investigated crimes throughout the entire United Kingdom.
Where was Lynley filmed?

Although the story takes place in Cambridgeshire and East Anglia, the TV series was mostly filmed in Ireland in 2024.
Filming took place in and around Dublin, the Wicklow Mountains, and Mallow Castle. Crews also shot scenes in England, specifically in the Thames Estuary and the Norfolk Broads.
In a recent interview with Precinct TV, Leo Suter, star of the show, explained that while the story is set in East Anglia with glimpses of Cambridge and London, they actually filmed everything in and around Dublin, specifically in the beautiful Wicklow Mountains. He described the location as having a special quality that really brought the production to life.
I had a great time, and Ireland was a beautiful location to shoot in. We managed to get some shots of the scenery, even though we weren’t actually filmed on location there.

Sofia Barclay, a star in the Barbara Havers series, also mentioned how beautifully the show captures the British countryside. She praised director Ed Bazalgette for really highlighting the natural scenery, and shared that some of the scenes, like those with Leo running through fields and getting muddy, are just a lot of fun to watch.
His personality really shines through in the landscapes he depicts, and that connection is especially clear when you see him, dressed in his suits, fully immersed in the English countryside.
We really enjoyed it – it was both fun and worked well! I especially loved being able to relax by the heater while he got drenched. It was a great time.
Suter explained that while the production involved a lot of muddy conditions, they also captured the beauty of the British countryside. They filmed along stunning coastlines and on picturesque islands, and other teams worked in the authentic setting of the Thames Estuary. American viewers are in for a real treat, getting a great look at all of it.
The new show Lynley starts on BBC One at 8:30pm on Monday, January 5th. You can watch all four episodes right now on BBC iPlayer.
