The popular Canon Clement Mysteries novels by Reverend Richard Coles are now a TV series on Channel 5, starring Matthew Lewis and Amanda Redman.
Based on the novel of the same name, *Murder Before Evensong* centers around Lewis as Canon Daniel Clement, a church rector whose life is disrupted when a body is discovered on church grounds. He must solve the mystery while also dealing with the demands of his difficult mother, portrayed by Redman, which presents a challenge of its own.
So, a typical cosy crime caper, then? Not according to Lewis.
The book was originally called ‘cosy crime,’ and the series has been grouped with similar books ever since. While a historical murder mystery solved by a priest seems like it would fit that label, the author doesn’t think it actually is cosy crime.
I’m hoping this story will surprise viewers. I want to appeal to both those expecting a certain kind of mystery and those who might usually avoid ‘cosy crime’ – I don’t want anyone to miss out just because of their assumptions about the series.
Nick Hicks-Beach has created richly developed characters and a story that tackles important and enduring social issues. The narrative is also compellingly dark and layered, giving it significant depth.
Viewers should really connect with the characters and story in this series. I’m hoping audiences appreciate its unique approach to the murder mystery genre and become invested, because the payoff will be well worth it.
Another aspect of the story likely to capture viewers’ attention is its picturesque setting.
The story takes place in Champton, a town we’ve created for the purposes of the narrative. But where was everything actually filmed?
Read on for a rundown of the main locations featured in Murder Before Evensong.
Murder Before Evensong filming locations

The show was filmed in the West Midlands, a region Coles feels deeply connected to. The village of Worfield, near Bridgnorth, was used as the location for the fictional town of Champton.
Other locations that feature in the series include:
- Leamington Spa, Warwickshire.
- Offchurch, Warwickshire.
- Welford-on-Avon, Warwickshire.
- Claverley, Shropshire.
- Dudmaston Hall, Shropshire.
- The former headquarters of the Express & Star, Wolverhampton.
- Chillington Hall, Staffordshire.
Filming at Chillington Hall was incredible,” said Adam James, who plays Bernard De Floures. “Locations like that do so much of the work for you – they really set the scene. It’s easy to get into character and feel like you truly belong in that world, like the owner of the estate.
“I felt very comfortable in that environment and there was almost no acting required.”
Murder Before Evensong premieres on 5 at 9pm on Tuesday 7th October.
