Okay, so Mark Jenkin – the guy who made those amazing, weird films Bait and Enys Men – he’s got a new one coming out. It’s another really unique, low-budget British film, and knowing his style, it’s going to be something special.
Jenkin’s highly praised film, Rose of Nevada, a sci-fi drama set in Cornwall, received excellent reviews after its debut at the Venice Film Festival last year. The film offers a fresh perspective on Cornwall’s history and culture.
The movie, featuring George MacKay and Callum Turner, centers around the Rose of Nevada, a ship that mysteriously reappears after being lost for three decades. MacKay and Turner become part of the ship’s crew and are unexpectedly sent back in time.
Ever wonder where the movie Rose of Nevada was filmed? Here’s everything you need to know about the filming locations.
Where was Rose of Nevada filmed?
Rose of Nevada was filmed on location in Cornwall, a region where director Jenkin has shot many of their films. The movie captures the stunning and atmospheric scenery of Cornwall, similar to the style of their previous projects.
Filming took place in several coastal towns, including Newlyn in West Cornwall, Mullion on the Lizard Peninsula, and Hayle on the north coast.
In an interview with The Guardian, filmmaker Jenkin described why he chose to film in Cornwall, saying it felt like his home and the center of his creative world. He clarified this didn’t mean he thought it was superior to other places, just that it was the area he felt most connected to.
He also mentioned the boat used for filming was a genuine working vessel. The captain would often use it for actual fishing trips whenever production paused.
Laura Giles, managing director of Screen Cornwall, commented on the film and Mark Jenkin’s influence, saying it’s special to see a local filmmaker tell a story based in Cornwall. She described Jenkin as a key figure who’s doing great work, and also highlighted the emergence of other promising filmmakers in the region.
Rose of Nevada is the third film in a loosely connected trilogy from director Jenkin, following ‘Bait’ and ‘Enys Men’. All three films are set in Cornwall and draw inspiration from Cornish Celtic traditions.
The film Enys Men is remembered for featuring the Cornish language on its poster, a first for any theatrical movie poster.
As a real cinema lover, I was fascinated to learn about Jenkin – he’s a huge supporter of Cornish culture and history. In 2020, he was rightfully recognized as a Bard of Cornwall, basically an honor given for championing Cornwall – or ‘Kernow’ as it’s known locally – through his films on an international stage. It’s amazing to see someone using the power of cinema to share their heritage with the world!
