In simpler terms, the upcoming BBC suspense show titled “The Guest” is penned by Matthew Barry, who previously worked on Men Up. The narrative revolves around a tense cat-and-mouse chase between Ria, a young cleaner portrayed by Gabrielle Creevy, and Fran, an enigmatic businesswoman played by Eve Myles, whose true intentions remain a mystery.
The four-part series explores the evolving bond between two females, as Ria gets drawn towards Fran. A startling incident further entangles them. However, it’s unclear who is manipulating whom, and who should be relied upon?
Where was the series filmed, and what do the cast members have to say about the various locations they worked at? Additionally, can you provide some insights into the settings that reflect the themes of wealth and class portrayed in the series?
Read on for everything you need to know about the filming locations used for The Guest.
Where was The Guest filmed?

The show featuring our guest was not only shot but also takes place in Wales. It managed to secure backing from the Welsh Government through their Creative Wales program.
The primary filming site was Whitson Court, a historic building that served as Fran’s residence, known as Maybury Court. This significant structure is located in the town of Goldcliff, within Newport. It holds a Grade II listing status.
Other locations used for filming included areas throughout Cardiff, and Rhossili Bay.
What have the cast and crew said about filming in Wales?

At Whitson Court, where Maybury Court is filmed, Eve Myles, the lead actress in Fran, remarked that “Maybury Court is a stunning manor with breathtaking surroundings. It’s teeming with various animals – peacocks, donkeys, and roosters, making it feel like an otherworldly sanctuary. This enchanting atmosphere perfectly complements the otherworldly essence of The Guest.
Gabrielle Creevy, known for her role on Ria, shared: “When those gates open, it feels enchanting, as if you’ve entered a fairytale or a magnificent castle. It’s the same sense of wonder you experienced as a child, daydreaming about living in such a place.
In simple terms, when Ria lays eyes on it for the first time, it’s as if she’s encountering an opportunity for a fresh start. The location is breathtakingly scenic, with expansive grounds and the Welsh countryside appearing strikingly attractive. This picturesque setting lends an enchanting and intriguing quality to the story.
Wales is amazing! Cardiff is this dynamic urban center, but just a bit outside, it transforms into something entirely different. We filmed at Rhossili Bay, which is among the most beautiful places I’ve ever laid my eyes on.
The upcoming series is likely to convey an impression of grandeur. Our director, Ashley Way, pays special attention not only to the finer points of the storyline but also incorporates the breathtaking landscapes and the city of Cardiff into the narrative as a significant character.
Besides the beautiful scenery and places in Wales, what truly stood out was the wonderful folks I encountered. Although I hadn’t worked in Wales previously, there was an immediate sense of warmth and camaraderie that I felt from both the team on set and the actors.
Executive producer Davina Earl commented: “Matthew (Barry) is from Wales, his writing is genuine, he’s familiar with the upscale areas of Cardiff where Fran might socialize, he grasps Ria’s environment, and he shares her background, similarly to Gabi, who portrays her.
Our manor house is stunningly beautiful, and Ria’s world is equally captivating, presented with such exquisite cinematography and a sense of grandeur that looks magnificent on-screen. Additionally, venturing to the Gower coastline in winter offered an awe-inspiring beauty all its own. Wales provided us with an abundance of stunning filming locations and visual ambition.
The Guest premieres on BBC One and iPlayer at 9pm on Monday 1st September.
