In Where Winds Meet, players can master up to 12 different martial arts styles, each usable with seven unique weapons – sometimes the same weapon is used differently depending on the style. Building a character can be complex, particularly for those new to the game and the Wuxia genre.
So, I put together this guide for anyone just starting out. It’s all about finding some really solid weapon and martial arts combos you can grab pretty early in the game. Basically, there are three main ways to play – Support, DPS (damage dealer), and Tank – and each martial art really shines in one of those roles. I’ll break down how to get each one and what it’s best for, so you can take notes and find what fits your playstyle!
Nameless Sword – Bellstrike (Splendor)
S Tier
- Why Is It Good: Versatility, Mobility, and Damage Mitigation, Decent Damage – A Well-Balanced Martial Art
- Goes Well With: Infernal Twinblades, Nameless Spear, Vernal Umbrella
- How to Obtain: Starting Martial Art
The Nameless Sword is the initial fighting style and weapon you begin with in Where Winds Meet. Unlike many online games where starting gear is quickly replaced, this combination is currently considered the strongest option available. It offers excellent movement, powerful attacks, defensive capabilities, and works well with a variety of different character builds.
Additionally, its powerful charged attack functions as a ranged strike, dealing significant damage in a wide horizontal line. This is effective against multiple enemies and can also finish off weakened opponents.
Players have two strong options for building their character. They can choose the Infernal Twinblades for a fast-paced, adaptable style that excels at taking on multiple enemies or focusing down a single target. Alternatively, the Nameless Spear offers a more defensive approach, complementing the path’s initial speed and allowing players to quickly switch to a protective stance, reduce incoming damage, and dominate a single enemy while still damaging those nearby.
If you’re using the Nameless Sword, the Vernal Umbrella is a great weapon to pair it with, creating a strong balance between close-combat and long-range attacks. It’s effective in both PvE and PvP. The Nameless Sword is powerful and adaptable, making it a better choice than the Strategic Sword, which looks impressive but is harder to master and doesn’t combine well with other fighting styles.
Vernal Umbrella – Skillbind (Jade)
S Tier
- Why Is It Good: Mobility and Damage, ranged attacks, and crowd control
- Goes Well With: Inkwell Fan, Nameless Sword
- How to Obtain: Travel to Kaifeng, go to the Time Tower, and complete the Quest (it has a map marker)
The Vernal Umbrella is considered one of the strongest Weapon/Martial Arts combinations in WWM thanks to its ability to control large groups of enemies and its strong attacks from a distance. It also has a unique hidden ability: as you fight, it builds up ‘Blossoms,’ which can then be used to unleash powerful special attacks when fully charged.
The Spring Sorrow ability is excellent for controlling groups, as it can completely stop regular enemies or players, and briefly slow down bosses. In contrast, Spring Away focuses on quickly moving and changing position, giving you a short moment of breathing room and allowing you to gain height for use with abilities like Cloud Steps or Leaping Frog.
Vernal Umbrella works really well with both Inkwell Fan and Nameless Sword, though each has its strengths and weaknesses. Inkwell Fan is the best option, as it specifically benefits users of Vernal Umbrella and complements other skills like Blossom Barrage and Flying Gourds.
Soulshade Umbrella – Skillbind (Deluge)
A Tier
- Why Is It Good: Buff, Survivability, Healing, Sustain
- Goes Well With: Panacea Fan
- How to Obtain: Soulshade Umbrella Post Station (East of Kaifeng)
The Soulshade Umbrella is a unique martial art that combines offense and support using an umbrella as a weapon. It focuses on boosting the stats of allies – and yourself – but does so by slightly reducing your defensive capabilities and attack power.
Its area-of-effect attacks make enemies stay vulnerable for longer, giving players more time to attack before facing bosses or other players.
The skill, “Echoes of a Thousand Plants,” is the most effective support ability in the game. It creates an area of healing and instantly switches you to your secondary weapon, letting you continuously recover health while quickly preparing for attacks.
This strategy involves using the Panacea Fan, which helps players get back resources needed for their special abilities (Panacea) and also provides significant damage output while protecting them.
Nameless Spear – Bellstrike (Splendor)
A Tier
- Why Is It Good: Good at deflecting, Good AOE, Decent Speed for a Heavy Weapon, Tank Build
- Goes Well With: Nameless Sword, Strategic Sword
- How to Obtain: Starting Martial Art
The Nameless Spear is a strong choice for players tackling PvE challenges in Where Winds Meet. It can deflect attacks, covers a large area, and is naturally durable. Using this Martial Art and weapon together builds a unique resource that unlocks the powerful ‘Unrivaled’ status, making it a valuable tool for any martial artist looking to excel.
When Unrivaled is active, Nameless Spear’s charge attack becomes incredibly fast, uses less stamina, and completely protects you – deflecting projectiles and blocking all damage. It essentially turns you into an unstoppable whirlwind.
The Nameless Spear can quickly shift between attacking and defending, using either a quick, four-hit sequence or a powerful, three-hit strike. When combined with Longsword Martial Arts, it offers better overall coverage, increased movement, and a strong way to focus damage on a single enemy.
Infernal Twinblades – Bamboo Cut (Wind)
B Tier
- Why Is It Good: Fast, Combos, Deadly Attacks, and High Mobility
- Goes Well With: Strategic Sword, Nameless Sword, Mortal Rope Dart
- How to Obtain: Complete Melodies of Life Qhinge (Deliver First Oddity), Joining Midnight Sect
Infernal Twinblades Martial Arts focuses on incredibly fast movement and rapid, continuous light attacks. It also features a powerful rage mode that significantly increases damage and quickly eliminates an opponent’s stamina.
As a fan, I have to say, this character’s combos are incredibly quick and powerful! What really stands out are two special moves. First, there’s this awesome forward lunge – it’s like a spinning attack that not only hurts enemies but also knocks them back. And then there’s the blade throw – it’s not just a single hit, it bounces around the enemy, dealing damage multiple times. It’s a really cool and effective technique!
Okay, so this weapon has a charge attack called Flamelash. When you use it, it activates this ‘rage mode’ that drains a resource called Karmic Flame – you can see how much you have left by the glow on the weapon. While it’s active, every hit does way more critical damage, but here’s the catch: it drains my health super fast. Basically, it’s a berserk mode – I’m trading health for massive damage. It’s risky, but if I play it right, I can really put out some serious hurt!
As a Twinblades player, I’ve found this weapon really shines when I use it alongside Nameless Sword – the way you can switch between them is just so smooth! It also works great with Strategic Sword, giving you a wider area of attack which is super helpful when fighting groups of enemies. Now, everyone says Mortal Rope Dart is the ‘best’ path for Twinblades, but honestly, I don’t think it’s worth it. It just doesn’t hit hard enough and leaves you way too open to attacks.
Stormbreaker Spear – Stonesplit (Might)
B Tier
- Why Is It Good: Decent AOE, Powerful Single Target Blasts, More Mitigation, Great for Aggro, Tank Build
- Goes Well With: Nameless Spear, Nameless Sword
- How to Obtain: New Player’s Gift (Check Mail for Ragin Tides General Gift)
Stormbreaker Spear is a martial art that centers around building up power to strengthen attacks and improve defense. It excels at dealing damage to a single opponent.
Stormbreaker Spear excels at controlling enemy aggression. Its skill, Storm Roar, acts as a taunt, holding boss enemies’ focus for a longer duration compared to other tanking martial arts.
Thunder Shock is the primary skill for dealing damage with this Spear Martial Art. It uses Fighting Spirit, which you build up through your regular attacks, to launch a combo that pushes enemies away. It’s particularly useful in player-versus-player combat, such as when Bounty Hunting.
I think this Martial Art is pretty good overall, but it really shines when you pair it with Nameless Spear or, even better, Nameless Sword. Using either of those lets you switch to a much more aggressive fighting style, which is awesome!
