White Sky Puts A Ghostly Spin On A Post-Apocalyptic World, And It Rules (Review)

As a huge movie and comic book fan, I’ve seen a lot of end-of-the-world stories. Usually, it’s the same old stuff – nuclear war, zombies like in The Walking Dead, or something really similar. So, it’s tough to come up with something fresh, but Image Comics’ White Sky #1 actually pulls it off. And honestly, what this first issue hints at for the future of the series is what’s really exciting.

The first issue of White Sky introduces a dramatically altered world where a white sky has upended life as we know it, replacing it with a reality governed by ghosts and mysterious powers. The story follows a father and daughter on a journey to San Francisco, adding a personal touch to this already intriguing setting. By the end of the issue, the series has established a captivating and suspenseful situation, hinting at a promising future for the story and its characters.

The Supernatural Elements Help White Sky Stand Out


Starting a new series is always challenging, but it’s especially tough when entering a popular genre. Luckily, White Sky takes a unique approach by diving into paranormal and supernatural themes, and it’s incredibly effective.

The story begins with a familiar feel, but introduces interesting new ideas around the middle. These ideas really take off towards the end, especially when ghostly elements come into play. Once they appear, the story becomes much more intense and expansive.

From the beginning, Mavinga’s art and Loughridge’s color choices create a feeling of loneliness. But as the story picks up, their style changes dramatically, making every scene intensely frightening and building incredible suspense. Dukeshire’s lettering perfectly complements the artwork, bringing real emotion to the characters’ dialogue. The final pages are very strong and suggest this series has a lot of potential, which should keep readers engaged in future issues and eager to find out what happens next.

The Series Shakes Things Big Time (And It’s The Right Call)


The action in this film is great, but one scene truly stands out and makes everything else even better. Stories set after the end of the world often show characters eating simple meals and remembering the past, but White Sky uniquely captures the special connection between a father and daughter during such a chaotic time.

This quiet conversation feels genuinely warm and real, shifting easily between playful teasing, practical talk, and tender memories of those who are gone. It truly feels like a father and daughter connecting, and this scene is what gives the story its emotional impact in multiple ways.

The ending of the story is particularly significant, and it’s important to talk about how those final events change things. Without giving away any spoilers, I’ll say that the last few pages dramatically shift the story’s focus, affecting both the characters and the overall ghostly mystery.

After reading Harms’ explanation, the reasoning behind the decision is clear, and I agree with it. However, I felt one part on the final page was a bit too dramatic, although that’s just my opinion and others might not feel the same way.

It’s still early to say for sure, but White Sky is already doing incredibly well and looks promising for the future.
