Who Do You Think You Are? season 23 confirms celebrity line-up from EastEnders legend to British TV acting royalty

The BBC announced the celebrities who will appear in the next season of Who Do You Think You Are?, with stars from various areas of entertainment taking part.

The next episode of the genealogy show will follow eight celebrities as they explore their family histories. Each star will uncover amazing stories of hardship, affection, loss, and courage, tracing their ancestors’ paths across the UK – from London to Glasgow – and around the world, including trips to Australia, Tasmania, Italy, India, the Bahamas, and Kenya.

The highly anticipated 23rd season will feature Adeel Akhtar, Amy Dowden, Harriet Walter, Joe Swash, Katarina Johnson-Thompson, Ruth Madeley, Toby Jones, and Zoe Ball.

The new series stars award-winning actor Adeel Akhtar as he explores his family history, following their journey from Gujarat, India, by sea to their involvement in building the city of Nairobi, Kenya.

Professional dancer Amy Dowden trades the dance floor for detective work when a family murder sends her to a farmhouse in West Wales, and a valley connected to her family history.

Award-winning actress Dame Harriet Walter discovers a hidden story of wartime intelligence work within her own family, and Joe Swash explores his roots, tracing his ancestry from a neighborhood known as Little Italy all the way to southern Italy.

As a total movie buff, I was really moved by Katarina Johnson-Thompson’s story. She went back to her family’s origins in the Bahamas, specifically the Exuma Islands, and dug into how her ancestors ended up in Miami. It was a tough journey, learning about the racial segregation they faced and the real fear caused by the Ku Klux Klan back then. It’s a powerful story about family and history.

Ruth Madeley discovers a hidden family story involving an adoption. Solving the mystery means using DNA tests and carefully researching her family history to find a relative lost to time.

Actor Toby Jones, known for his work on stage and screen, explores a family story that takes him on a journey from the Theatre Royal in Margate, England, all the way to Meerut, India. He’s tracing the footsteps of his great-great-grandfather, who served with the British Army in India.

Rounding out our series this year is TV and radio host Zoe Ball, who delves into her family history in Scotland and Cornwall, uncovering a story of struggle, loss, and ultimately, resilience.

According to Simon Young, the BBC’s head of history programming, ‘Who Do You Think You Are?’ consistently delivers amazing discoveries. He believes the show, with the help of its willing participants, reveals the fascinating and varied stories that make up Britain today, and ultimately brings people together through shared history.

According to Colette Flight, executive producer at Wall to Wall Media, the popular show Who Do You Think You Are? is back with eight celebrities exploring their ancestry and uncovering family secrets.

We’ve traveled throughout the UK and the world, witnessing the powerful emotions – surprise, joy, laughter, and even tears – as people uncover the remarkable stories of their ancestors and how those stories have influenced their families and themselves. They also learn about the significant historical events and social changes that affected their families, ranging from harsh Victorian prisons to the fight for civil rights in America, and from the lives of Italian outlaws to times of financial hardship.

Who Do You Think You Are? returns to BBC One and iPlayer this spring.
